This pic looks to me like the blade has been ground down (no sharpening choil) rather than a factory plain edge, although the seller says original. Was this ever available as a factory plain edge and would it look like that? Thanks in advance for any input. I also found this old thread from a few years ago which asks the same question:

AFAIK, both the old and new version(different OHO hole) should have serration, and I agree with your assessment, basically all my 'modern' SAKs(in past 20+ years) do have sharpening choil and GAK probably wouldn't be an exception.

Thanks. I think I'll just pay a bit more money and get a brand new Ranger Grip 78 instead of the used German Soldier.

Looks ground down to me also. I have had that partially serrated model on my key chain for several years now. It has proven to be tough and ridiculously useful. It is lumpy looking and I wanted to hate it initially, but it became a favorite over time. I've had the Ranger Grip 78 for years also. It is big, very big.

My mistake. It appears that I have the Swiss Soldier version.

It's ground down. The GAK blade is chisel ground and its edge is 80 mm, serrated 55 mm from the tip. It's a Bundeswehr contract job and they're all like that. The original 2003 design was refined in 2007: the blade's one-handed opening hole was made more circular and the lock release bars became more prominent. That is the only production variant.
