Want to grab my first Victorinox and would love to have one with a corkscrew and a phillips, but they don't make one unless I go with monster. I want to keep this pretty thin (preferably 2-3 layers) so I have to choose.

Which do you use more.. your phillips bit or corkscrew (yeah.. I love wine).

Cheers,
Hawk

I have never, ever used the corkscrew on a SAK. So I vote for the phillips.

Consider the Explorer Plus, which has both a sweet phillips that folds out 180 degrees, and a corkscrew. At 4 layers, it is very pocketable. But if you into skinny, thats cool.

Ah yes, the eternal choice. You can have both things with an "Explorer," but you gain the magnifier. If you go Wenger, you get both in the 557 models.

Otherwise, I'd say corkscrew (esp, if you're a wine lover). The Spartan and Tourist both have the small screwdriver (on the can opener), which is tapered to fit larger phillips screws, and the corkscrew can hold a jewelers screwdriver.

I'm a regular wine drinker and use the corkscrew frequently. If you're not a wine drinker, that's a different story.

I do not think the phillips screwdriver that replaces the corkscrew is worth a damn, though. The small, flat-head screwdriver on the tip of the can opener, however, works fabulously on most phillips screw heads--much better than most phillips drivers because it bites very well. Therefore, if you'd really like the corkscrew, you needn't think you're giving up having a phillips screwdriver.

If you drink wine regularly, then corkscrew. The small flathead screwdriver on the tip of the can opener can drive phillips head in a pinch.

I've hardly ever used the corkscrew on a SAK, simply because when I need to open a bottle of wine there has always been a better corkscrew handy. I have used the Phillip's head many times, especially when working on electronics. The flatheads do work, but the smaller one can strip screw heads. You also get more torque from the Phillip's head due to the grip style. Personally, I would go with the Tinker or the Centurion, which is the better (though somewhat larger) lock back equivalent to the Tinker.

It's really Sophie's Choice. Either way, part of your spirit dies.
I usually go with corkscrew though. I'm just screwy that way.

I don't understand how the phillips is winning. I just recently decided to go with the corkscrew. My climber model should be getting here within a week. I went with the corkscrew because the climber was ten bucks cheaper than the super tinker. I'd get the one can find the cheapest, and if funds don't matter to you, get both.

It is important to note that you can use other tools on phillips screws, but you can't use other tools instead of a corkscrew, like opening wine (especially if you like it) and holding a mini-screwdriver bit. I also read that it's good for untying knots, but I'll have to see for myself. I think the corkscrew looks nicer, too, a little out of the ordinary in someone's pocket.

I got the climber as previously stated because I want this to be my "EDC" knife. I wanted to try out a scissors model. The next one on my list is the Alox Farmer (with a saw), which I'm planning on getting for woods work. I think the scissors vs saw depends on your intended use. I really don't see myself ever needing a saw unless I'm in the woods, where there is wood needing to be sawed... You should think about whether you are getting this for camping/hiking (saw) or EDC/indoors (scissors).

Thanks guys... to add to this.. sissors or saw?

Saw all the way. What do you need scissors for when you have a knife?

Having said that, to me the question has always been saw or no saw. The saw does work but it's small. If you really have to do some sawing you're better off with another tool. My advice would be to keep it simple to keep the bulk down and just get the essential tools that are full sized for what they are and that do the job well. A thinner profile SAK feels better in the hand.

I voted for the phillips head driver cause you're bound to encounter many more screws than bottles of wine. In the end only you know best what you need your SAK to do for you.

Phillips, simply because wine is no longer corked in Australia so there is no need.

And I refuse to buy a SAK that does not have scissors. Most useful tool in the set for mine (except for the blades perhaps). However, get a Huntsman (corkscrew) or Fieldmaster (phillips) and you get both. :)

Corkscrew for me,I like wine on occasion, and always make it a point to open the bottle with my Climber or Huntsman.I also like the tiny standard screwdriver that screws into the end of the corkscrew.I use it to tighten the screws on my,or my wifes/friends, reading glasses. As stated before, you can use the driver at the canopener end in place of a phillips.

I'll also pick scissors over saw.In my day to day life,I don't have much use for a saw. But,I use scissors almost daily.

Saw if you're an outdoorsman, scissors if you spend most of your time working indoors.

I prefer the corkscrew over the back-spring phillips. I come across too many screws in corners that the back-spring phillips can not get to.

Scissors or saw? I prefer both if possible... "What do you need scissors for when you have a knife?" Well for one thing, personal grooming tasks like trimming the mustache are much easier with scissors...

What is this "trimming" of which you speak?

My vote goes to corkscrew (and scissors). I just saved the day at a wedding reception a couple of months ago when the bozos running the bar forgot a corkscrew for cases of wine. Scissors vote for multiple grooming and utility reasons. I use them a bunch.

Vic Climber rules. It's the way to go if you want to keep it slimmer than the Explorer :thumbup:

I use my pointed flat head drivers for philips screws, so the corkscrew gives me more versatility to punch holes etc.

I'd go with the corkscrew over the Phillips, not so much for the corkscrew, but for the tiny screwdriver that it holds. I've used the corkscrew on corks a few times too of course. I don't need the Phillips on my SAK because it's a Cybertool and has a few different Phillips bits anyway. The can opener screwdriver works well enough. If you can't get what you need done with that, you should probably be using a quality tool like a Wiha or a Craftsman anyway.
