Victorinox Hunter Pro vertical blade play

This post should be moved to a more relevant forum for better chance of answers.

In my experience, vertical play is pretty common with back locks, not all have it, but most do. How much, it depends. Some can live it it, some can't.

If it a lock back then I'm afraid it is a known issue with the design. The play should be minimal and there is nowt to do about it.

Not in my experience. I have plenty of tight lockbacks made by Buck, Cold Steel, Spyderco, Puma, etc. After being used for many years, the steel can wear and there can be some wiggle, but not new. I only know of one company that says some play in a lockback is expected, and the firm is not Victorinox. Plus, the three lockbacks I have from that firm have no play.

The Vic locking knives such as the liner lock Hunter Pro and even the button lock models are slipjoints primarily with a secondary lock feature. As such, the lock is only to prevent the blade from closing, not to hold the blade in the open position. The spring performs that task. So, you will have some up and down play which is the spring slipping and the lock stopping it from folding up. It's a similar setup to the liner locking Old Timers and other traditional liner locking folders.

I meant strictly with the Victornox, but I was actually thinking of the side lock. My apologies, it's been a long hot day!

I agree there are many other manufacturers making solid, un-giving kickbacks. EKA come to mind for me.

Victorinox's warranty is excellent. If you have issues, contact them via your distributor, they will definitely solve it.

SAKsRCool - Good info. Explains why there is a 'spongy' springiness to the blade when locked open on my Rucksack. Thanks

Thank to you all for your answers and let me just tell you the whole story.
Cold steel Voyager and Lawman, Spyderco Manix (first edition), Kersahw gentlemen folder: some examples with back lock without any vertical play.
What happened is that as I am a Swiss collector, I was very happy that Victorinox finally issued a hard use folder. But when I noticed that vertical play, I went back to the store and the seller was kind enough to let me examine 7 other Hunter Pro: they all had the same issue.
That's what I explained to Victorinox customer service by email, asking them what they intend to do about this issue.
The Lady who answered my email in French (that is my native language) was obviously a German speaking person, because she justified the vertical play by "that will guarantee that the knife works well even if there is pollution". I guess what she meant by pollution is dust or impurities...Does that make any sense ???
Anyway, she was very kind and suggested that if I am not happy, I should return the knife for revision or repair. I don't know if I will do it for now because I've heard (but don't quote me on that) that Vic interrupted this production for a reason not mentioned. So, who knows, maybe it is to fix this issue.
I totally agree that this vertical play doesn't affect the use of the knife, but if other companies can avoid it, why not Victorinox ?

I am not a lock specialist but I wonder if this play doesn't come from the space between the lock and the blade. Compare the Kershaw gentleman folder with the Vic Hunter pro.

C'est possible, I checked some of my lock-backs that have wiggle and they are all the ones with gaps. The knives that are tight have no space between them.

Maybe there is "pollution" in between there :D

Bother! Last night I missed the fact that the Victorinox Hunter Pro is anything but Traditional. Then today's post rubbed my nose in the fact.

Moving to General...

Hi! I retrieved that old post because I am searching for information about the Victorinox Hunter Pro. I am going to order such a folder (these days, September 2022), with polyamide/rubber handles and I am looking for information, any comments etc. So, do you have the same opinion about that knife after so many years? Had already something changed from the Victorinox itself as far as the quality? I would like to have your opinion, comments,... Thank you!

Some of the first knives were not extremely solid.

I have a few of the recent ALOX hunter pros and they do not seem to have any play.

I have also not heard of any common issues with them.

I do not use them enough to talk about any issues that could develop with use.
