Hi I just bought a huntsman and when I opened it I saw a small gouge in the front scale like another knife had hit it. I am wondering if the warranty will cover this and if so would they send me a new one?

Let's see some picture of this gouge.

Keep in mind it's going to look a lot worse after being carried for a while.

I would post some pictures but I have no way of doing that since i do not own a digital camera:grumpy:. That is a good point about it looking worse after it being carried for a while.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. unless it looks like it is enough to actually crack the scale or keep it from holding the toothpick or tweezers. Unless you were trying to get a mint one for a collection, in which case you would be better off finding one in person. Use it and enjoy it, one of the nice things about vics is that they tell a story. And if you use it up, then get it replaced at that point.

You’re right. It’s only a small and shallow gouge and in no way affects the functionality of the knife. It's only cosmetic and I'm sure that in time it will blend in with all of the other scratches it will get.

After you carry and use it for a while and it gets beat up, you can send it in and they'll clean it up and replace the scales with new ones for a few dollars. Victorinox has excellent service.

You can easily do that yourself. You could change the scales to whatever color you wan't as well or get some plus scales for it.

If it's not an issue for you to use then just carry it. Use it for a while and when it's time to clean it up give it the spa treatment just send it in to vic. They will clean it, oil it, and replace the scales for you.

Interesting that you actually found a new vic with an issue though. I have never heard of a defective one being released from the factory.

Yes that is strange. Once I was looking at a vic in a blister pack and it had a similar problem with a small scratch on the front scale. I would say that 99.9 percent of the time the quality control is spot on with making sure that there are no defects.

I think Vic focuses on functional quality control since the knives are built to quite a high tolerance. Small nicks and such would not be the reason to bin an otherwise good knife. Every time you up the standards, you up the cost, so a small nick once and a while is probably the cost of keeping the overall prices as good as they are. Keep in mind the main reason why no one else does what victorinox does is that no one else can make it profitable. And they even helped wenger out to keep them profitable as long as possible. No one else can compete with them. Also considering that 99.9% of victoriox owners are not "knife guys" as in they are not super particular about it, just buying one because they know it will work, and the history of it.
