I recently picked up a Victorinox Adventurer. I like it, but I was surprised it wasn't a liner lock like the other Vic lockbacks I had seen. I am having a hard time putting details together about these models. Which have the side lock and which are liner locks? Is the Centurion the exact same as the Adventurer, only black instead of red? I like the looks of the one-handers, but I can't put my hands on any so I can't get a grip on their features. What do people think of these and what recommendations can you give?

Agreed! I wish Vic and their vendors would state whether it's a liner-lock (I like MUCH better) or the side-lock...

I don't know if I have a REAL reason for liking the liner-lock better... I just do...:o

As far as I can tell, the black ones, the German Army Trekker and the Rescue Tool have liner-locks, the others (the red ones and the blue) have side-locks. I may be wrong, but this is what I've noticed during my numerous trips to the knife shop. :)

Correct. Generally the black scaled models have the linerlock and the red/blue ones the sidelock. The one notable exception in addition to those mentioned, is the regular (non OH) Fireman which comes in red OR black.

I like the OHs a lot. I even had my EDC Outrider modded into a OH version. They don't "flip" open like most tacs these days as they are not designed for that kind of work. They do open without undue effort. One thing people usually note is the slight vertical play when blade is open. This is not a defect or design flaw but built into the design by Victorinox and presents no safety issues whatsoever.

I have an One-Hand Fireman (thanks, FelineVet!!! :D ) and I really, really like it. It's too large for EDC for my purposes, but for the right applications, along with the neat-o Victorinox swivel-clip leather belt pouch, I love using it when appropriate.

That's good to know about the slight vertical play. I noticed that last week when looking at my Trekker. I missed it when I bought the knife, & thought about taking it back for another. Guess I won't have to. :)
Any idea why Vic built that in?

Is the Centurion a liner lock or a side lock? It's a black one, but I thought I had read it was a side lock.

good to know about that vertical play. It freaked me out when I bought mine.

a bit off topic but the locking blades are a good combo edge IMO, I like the plain edge close to the handle.

I actually prefer the sidelock. Maybe because I'm a leftie. Nothing wrong with the liner locks though.
