My Victorinox Mauser was getting a bit hard to open so I spent some time cleaning it today. The blade slots are too narrow for cotton swabs so I used a pipe cleaner bent in a J and some Goo Gone to clean a couple of decades of old lube and grime. Oiled it with some 3in1 on a small artist brush so as not to overdo it. Works smoothly again. Love the knife but I would have rather had both a can opener and bottle opener instead of the clip point blade they added for the Mauser version.

yeah sometimes openings get stiff
due to the hardening and drying out
of lubricants.
i would dunk my saks in warm water
for a bit and use a tooh brush.
flusing out a jet of water into every
gap and space for good measure.
completely dry it out and then oil joints
it has always worked for me!
never had the SAK mauser.

and honestly, even if i did i could never
bring myself to use it unless its in a sorry state...
back in the day wenger even had a buck knives SAK range with clip points

so hoping to see some future victorinox
with a clip point blade in its regular line up.
but the mauser model is such a seriously
cool double large blade model to have :-)

I don't collect anything, every knife I have is for use. I got the Mauser at a flea market sometime in the mid '80s for cheap and it was, still is, in beautiful condition. I have only had to strop it occasionally, never been on a stone. It lived in a leather sheath in my glove box for about 10 years and was not used that whole time. I suspect that's why the old lube hardened. Anything more solid than oily pocket lint is a dirty knife to me. I've read on the net that the Mauser is supposed to be fairly rare and collectible but I have some doubts. In just a 2 day test I found 6 on ebay in various conditions and I understand the production run was 250,000 knives! A 108 mm knife is too large for comfortable pocket carry so I have a horizontal belt sheath when I want to rotate it in for EDC. As for cleaning, sharpening also, water never touches my knives since most of them are high carbon steel and any water that got trapped would be a source of rust. Oil for cleaning and oil for sharpening.
