I've been trying to choose a new SAK model lately. I have decided that I think I like Victorinox over Wenger because of the numerous debates about the two companies. The Mountaineer seems like the model I'd like from Victorinox, but it says it has a metal saw? I do not see a sharp looking saw on the large file tool. I'd be using the file on my finger nails and not really anything else. If my finger were to slip while filing my nails I'd prefer to keep my fingers attached. Is there really a saw on the file, and how bad is it? Pictures of the actual saw part, like close up, would help. From most of the online pictures it appears that the file is smooth on both ends.

I am trying to find an online store that sells both the Victorinox Mountaineer and the Wenger Traveler because if the saw is too much of an issue I'd like to return it for a Wenger Traveler, but I'd prefer the Victorinox. Anyone know a good place that has both and will be lenient with an exchange?

Is the saw that sharp? Would it be a problem when using the file to use on finger nails? Which model would you recommend?

The "metal saw" is the same sort you find on a Letherman or other multitool: a set of somewhat thick hacksaw teeth in the edge of the file. They arent' that sharp, certainly not sharp like the wood saw!!

I use the file on my Swiss Army knifes and Leathermen and other tools all the time, and have never had a problem with the metal saw cutting me. They all also leave the opposite edge smooth, so you can use that edge near your nails for extra safety.

Oh, I forgot the second part: Smoky Mountain Knife Works (http://www.eknifeworks.com) has a pretty good selection, and superb service. If you needed to return one, I don't think it would be a problem with them. To be sure, though, you should ask before you order.

If you live near a Walmart or a sporting goods store, then i'm sure one of them will have some sort of vic SAK with the file/metal saw combo. It's the same tool on every model as fas as i'm aware. I have one on my Champion and my Ranger. Pretty dull, but they will handle some mild metals with no problems. I've used mine to cut galvanized pipe before. Not fun, but doable. You should be able to handle one to see for yourself. You'll be more likely to cut yourself with old butter knife, than with the metal saw.

Have you ever seen a regular file with "teeth" on the sides? That's what the teeth on the SAK metal saws are. They work in a pinch, but the proper tool for the job will always be the best choice. ;)

Like many I used to own old unreliable beat up cars - that always seem to need work......

I used to use the metal saw on my Victorinox SAK to cut through rusted up 1/2" bolts that would not budge - and the SAK metal saw was my tool of choice because it worked so well.....

Think about it, sawing through steel is not easy -
don't expect it to be like the woodsaw through soft wood -
but the metal saw is still amazing for what it can do.

The files are also very useful - different grades/coarseness on the two sides for different uses. Coarser for quicker filing, and less coarse to help get a better smoother finish. The less corase is fine for one's fingernails - it is designed for that.

BTW - SMKW (eknifeworks.com) has the -
Victorinox Translucent Onyx Mountaineer V73635 for $15.99
