Here was the situation and I am really embarresed. I recently went Camping & forgot to bring a can opener. I know I am a Dumbass & my wife called me such so, save your breath! I have been looking at both Wenger & Victorinox knives. I need one with a good can opener & a punch for oil cans..the blade does not really matter as I carry a pocket knife. Which one of these is the better choice? Thanks!

They are owned by the same people are are both of good quality. Get which ever one is has the tools you want and is easy to obtain.

since when??

either way, i would go with victorinox. fit and finish is usually better, and after a lot of use the blades on my wengers would always loosen up - not so with a victorinox. my only gripe with victorinox is that the pick and tweezers are easy to lose because they protrude slightly from the scales. however, wenger isnt so great either - if you keep your fingernails trim its nearly impossible to get wenger's pick/tweezers out.

as to where to buy - check out amazon.com - more specifically a retailer there called 'AllSpareTools'. i just ordered several Victorinox SAKs from them and their prices are dirt cheap and they deliver quite fast. around $18-22 for most SAKs like the hunter, camper, etc. .ive never liked the massive ones like the champ - too many stupid useless tools and its like carrying a brick in your pocket.

cheers,

As far as I know Victorinox bought Wenger not long ago, they are however separate factories.

IMHO they are both good quality but still Vic comes ahead in general, notice that the can opener design is different unless you are considering the Vic "soldier" or Wenger "standard issue" which use the Vic style.

Although I never actually used them for their intended purposes, I always thought the Wenger can opener looked better than the V'nox. But that's just going off looks.

And except for the scissors, I think V'nox makes a better knife pretty much across the board.

I've used the can openers and punches from each maker. To me, the Victorinox is best. IMHO, the Wenger is a decent second, but the tools and handles seemed a bit flimsy for me. Still, a Wenger, for its price, might be great for camping trips (where a lost item would not be painful) where you'd only use trhe can opener and punch. Hope this helps.

Just don't buy a Wenger with the STUPID camouflage pattern because the first time you drop it in the woods, it will disappear on you! :D

yeah, camo SAKs are just about the stupidest invention ever.

if theyre the same company, why on earth dont they just use the wenger scissors on the victorinoxes? they are so much better and more reliable. *sigh*

Victorinox for sure. This question has been asked before and Victorinox always comes out the most popular choice.

I own several of both, but like Victorinox knives better, and I find the V-nox can openers work faster and easier for me. I may be in the minority, but I much prefer V-nox's scissors to Wenger's. The Wenger scissors, when the spring eventually breaks or wears out (and they do) you can't just get it fixed except perhaps sending it back to the company. If a V-nox scissors spring wears out, you can easily buy and put in a replacement. Just a thought.

Like many others I like Victorinox over Wenger.

As for specifically the can-opener - I actually like the Victorinox Combo or Combination Tool - which combines 4 functions into one tool
Can-Opener
Bottlecap-lifter
Screwdriver
wire-stripper
(and there is an unofficial function of the ability to use the corner of the combo tool for Phillip screws too)

The Combo tool replaces the functions on the two separate can-opener and bottlecap-lifter tools - so allowing more compact or/slimmer SAKs.

I like Minimalist SAKs (link to thread)

The Victorinox Waiter is a favorite -

and there's the very thin Victorinox Bantam Alox -

Both Wenger and Victorinox have some cool models and are of good quality. However, trustworthy SAK fans told me that Wenger's backsprings are weaker. I own half a dozen Wengers and have had no problems so far, but my Victorinox knives seem to have a stronger "snap", even after years of use.

For backpacking there are three kinds of SAKs that I love: the Victorinox Pioneer series, the Victorinox 111mm series and the Wenger 120mm series. Since you are carrying another pocket knife and are more interested in the tools than the blade, I think the perfect SAK for you would be the alox Farmer.

The Farmer, like all alox models, is sturdier than the traditional cellidor knives and packs all the tools you need outdoors. It has a main blade, a canopener with a small screwdriver, a caplifter with a larger screwdriver, a reamer (alox reamers are WAY better than the regular awls) and a woodsaw (which you'll find very useful).

As an all around EDC SAK that will serve you well in an urban or outdoors environment, the Victorinox Huntsman is hard to beat.

My problem with Wenger is overall fit and finish, and the backsprings are very weak, and I have seen some very old Victorinox SAKs and very old Wenger SAKs and the Wenger ones lose all snap, to the point where you have to push everything closed. I would go with Victorinox, myself.
