Does anyone know what pin materials and sizes are used in building SAKs?

Does anyone know what pin materials and sizes are used in building SAKs?

They are 1-1/4 inch pins by my measure of several in my SAK collection. Also, they are made of stainless steel, rather than regular polished metal, which accounts for their higher price. This info is not found in SAKWIKI, for some reason, but from my experience in replacing one.

View attachment 1284461 I think most of construction pins are yellow or white brass. Stainless steel is pretty hard to spin a head on.
According to yablanowitz, the blade pivot pin on a 91mm is .096" in diameter which is 2.5mm. The back tool pin is .084", which is 2.13mm. The combo tool pin on a 84mm knife is .080", which is 2.03mm.
My guess is that the latter 2 pins are 2mm.
Do not confuse construction pins with stainless straight pins which nest under the corkscrews.

I think you will need to specify which length of SAK are you planning to mod. Different models do use different sizes of pins. For example, the 91mm will require the 2.5mm brass pin for two pivots, 2.25mm brass pin for the "floating" pin and the backspring tool pivot.

I didn't have a 93mm Alox apart at that time to measure the pins, and I don't have one apart right now, either. It is entirely possible the smaller pins I measured started out as 2mm and had swelled a bit when they were set. I was just reporting what I found when I measured what I had handy. 2 and 2.5mm for the Celidor and 3mm for the Alox would work, but metric pin stock is not available locally, so I buy brass rod and turn it down to size.

91mm are the focus right now because my favorite (I know better than to claim "best" for any SAK) is the Master Craftsman (wood saw, metal file, large & small blade, scissors, cap lifter, can opener, Phillips, awl, finer flat screwdriver). Since you can effectively convert a Ranger into a Master Craftsman by replacing the cork screw I'm looking at what would be needed to make such a conversion. Older Master Craftsmans with the fish scaler might be finagled into taking the small Phillips in its place. Just exploring the possibilities.

Thanks for the pin information.
