I have really grown to like the Pioneer Rancher for EDC. I find myself going back to it time and time again. The large pen blade I only ever use for peeling fruit and slicing it down to bite size chunks for my 1 year old daughter. A problem that has developed is the large pen blade gets very tight. I am always sure to wash the blade under cool water and I have tried 100% mineral oil delivered on a match for just a drop of oil, and yet the knife continues to have a grinding sound and be very hard to open. It also will not snap closed any longer... i have to push it closed before it slide back into my pocket.

Should I send this knife back to Victorinox to work over or is there something else I can do to clear the funk that has apparently taken up residence in the main blade joint?

You've got some grit in the joint. I've had it happen to two of my knives. Try putting it in a bowl of hot soapy water and then keep opening and closing the blade for 5 minutes.
It should clear after a short time, mine did. I tried WD40 to start with, but that didn't seem to help at all. Good luck.

Tri-Flow, I Swear By It, It Oils The Pivot, And Cleans Out All Of The Gunk And Dirt. Should Smooth It Up Fine.

Like the posters above said use warm soapy water and open and close the blade repeatedly. Toothbrush also sounds good. As for oiling, I recommend Victorinox oil. Yes it is kinda expensive but that small bottle will last you a loooong time.

One other place that most folks miss to clean is the spring area sides. Open the blade or tool to a 90 degree position and look at the edges of the spring that sticks out and clean off the gunk.

alright, i have tried all of the cleaning methods and seen very little improvement. i'll keep at it. thanks for all the feedback!

I had the exact same thing happen to my vic farmer. Like the others have suggested I ended up washing it in very hot water and soap a few times. Making sure to dry it out and eventually put a couple drops of oil (olive oil at the time) and opened and closed it a lot so to get the oil worked in. The thing is like new again and snaps open and closed like it was new again. I wouldn't go as far to put the thing in boiling water but I did use very hot water from the kettle to rinse it out.

The WD40 should be able to clear out the dirt and gunk, but I would not count on it to lubricate the joint. You are probably better off with some oil for lubrication.

I had a similar problem with my alox solo. Started out gritty.... got better with time but then was rough again. Took some very hot water and Dawn dish soap to finally get the grit out.
