Just a few notes on what, IMHO, is one of the best buys in a knife. The V-nox Pocket Pal is a traditioal slip joint folder in the senator pattern. It consists of two blades, a 2 1/4" main blade and a 1 1/4" pen blade, both spear point.
The pen blade is extremely thin and takes a super fine edge. The knife can be held like a pencil and used like a scalpel or X-acto knife. It's great for fine detail cutting.
The main blade is great for lighter everyday cutting chores. Peeling apples, sharpening a pencil, opening mail, that sort of thing. It also makes a very good steak knife for when the restaraunts knives won't get the job done without scareing the bejeesus out of the other customers.
It is also an excellent whittler. I have been carrying one for over 12 years. It is one of the most useful kives I have ever owned. Best of all, they can be had for $10 or less.

I had one but :( lost it. Would buy another but stumbled upon a similar model from Case that I've been using from time to time (when I lose that one, then it's back to Victorinox). The Pocket Pal's a GREAT little knife for the money. If I pick up another, I'll probably get the Secretary instead, which seems to be the same knife but with silver alox handles instead of the red plastic. It's unbelievable how often you'll find yourself using a knife like this - and how much you can get done with it, without ever having to resort to the giant, serrated, tactical, one-hand opening, compression-torsion-liner-bells-AND-whistles locking single-bladed machete in your other pocket. :D

The Pocket Pal is a neat little knife. Thin and extremely easy to carry. The Ace hardware store here sells them for 7.99. I have a blue aluminum handled one that a buddy of mine got for me a few years ago when he took a trip to Germany and Switzerland.

I have carried my Vic. Pocket Pal every day for at least 4 years. Ocassionaly I'll forget to kiss my wife good-bye before leaving for work, but if I forget my Pal, I WILL return to pick it up. If my little buddy gets misplaced, I will stop everything I am doing and find it..no I mean stop everything. I love it!

It is intestering what knife a person settles on for everyday carry; what knife is actually used daily. The Pal forces the " art of cutting" out of me and delivers great joy when I quickly hone it on a small ceramic rod. It's like Gene Autrey used to sing: " I'm back in the saddle again, out where a friend is a friend..." Do any of you guys remember him? :)

While we're on this subject, does anybody know the name of the Victorinox knife identical to the Pocket Pal but with red metal scales instead of plastic? (I'm not referring to the silver-scaled Secretary.) I saw this knife sometime ago in a cuttlery shop, but I can't seem to find it at the usual dealers on the web.

Hello Margelatu: While on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls this summer and then in a gift shop, I purchased a Wenger Delemont, which is very similar to the Victorinox Pocket Pal. When closed, it looks identical to the Pal, and that is what caught my eye along with the red anodized aluminum scales. The main blade is spear point, but the small blade is a pronounced clip point instead of a pen. It too operates on a single spring for both blades, but the spring rises into a key chain holder at the small blade end of the knife.

The Delemont is very light weight, thin and looks much like the pocket pal. This may not be what you are referring to, but it is as close as I can get to a knife identical to a Victorinox Pocket Pal with metal scales. For me it is a perfect knife that I have not used a lot yet, because I keep it in a survival kit.

The Pocket Pal is a cool little pen knife. I have the basic red plastic handled one, but the one with aluminum handles sounds like something I might be interested in getting. I don't think I've seen one in the stores, though.

The Pocket Pal is one of those knives you forget is in your pocket, and the thin blades are ideal for many of the typical cutting chores needed in many environments.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just bought a Secretary for ten bucks on Ebay. I was thinking of an Umfaan so that saved me, hmm - about $285. Now what to do with all that money? If I buy one more Secretary I would have saved enough to pay for the Mayo TNT I have on order. Ain't life grand?

protodoc: As the first person in this thread to mention the Secretary model, I believe I am due a percentage of the money you saved. ;)

I owe you eternal gratitude. Give me your number and I will fax you a $100 bill. ;)

I very frequently carry my pocketpal, got a few at Gandermountain on close out for $2.97, now that's a bargain. They are very thin and light, and are sheeple friendly. Good whittlers too.
