Has anyone tried this? A friend told me about it and I was excited until I saw it had a pull through. Why would Victorinox include that?

Probably all that's needed for a typical Vic purchaser who would never even sharpen their knife otherwise.

Sadly, so. But that isn't going to change. Learn to live with the fact that less than 1% of all people, including those who carry knives every day, know or care about them. In my whole life (and I'm pretty old  ) I don't think I've met more than three people who were at all knowledgeable about cutting instruments, and one of them is now dead. Almost everything I have learned has come through the internet by communities of like minded folk in forums like this (and practical experience, of course.) In my ignorant past, I tried any number of sharpening gadgets, and most of them worked, even those that buggered up the blade. Vic must have figured go with the lowest common denominator, and that's okay. They know their customers.

Not everyone needs a razor edge and I imagine the pocket sharpener can put on an edge that'll cut through a piece of rope or such. There's nothing wrong with not choosing a razor edge especially on a knife that might only get used once or twice a day.
I use an old school steel on mine, but the other day I couldn't find my steel so I used my ceramic coffee cup. I had forgotten how well that coffee cup works, goes to show how important free handing is. Free hand sharpening is a skill that takes developing and practice which most people don't feel a need to learn, so a pull through sharpener serves their needs well.

Makes sense. It just made me cringe, but before I started learning I probably would have used it as well. I still may get one because of the size and just ignore the V.

I carry a Deluxe Tinker in a belt sheath. I made my own "sharpener" from half a tongue depressor and glued a strip of 400 grit emory to one side and a strip of 600 to the other. Fits nicely in my belt pouch with the Tinker.
