Just recently I got my first SAK and realize I have missed a lot good use by not owning one. I'm 59 yrs. old and now have a number of SAKs and probably will add some more. My question is who or what is officer sussie that I see on some SAKs or advertised as an Officer sussie Sak. I know it's a dumb question but I haven't found any info regarding this. Your knowledge will be appreciated. Thank you! :o

The Swiss Army actually issues their soldiers the "Soldier" knife, but the officers (as differentiated from the soldiers) carry (or perhaps are issued) the "officer suisse" knives. I think I read that somewhere a while back - I know the first part about the soldiers is true; not sure about the officers.

I don't know if the steel is any different between the two or not.

Many others, more knowledgeable than I, will be along to clarify this, I'm sure! ;)

Officers knives are privately purchased , and may contain refinements like corkscrews etc . Probably the most common of the type is the Spartan and its earlier forebears . These became popular with GI's who liberated them from German Officers ( who privately purchased them also ) , these types became so popular that they were carried in the PX's in occupied Germany . Most Cellidor models of today , are descendants , due to brand recognition , the marking system has carried over to the present .

It is not "Officer Sussie", but "Officier Suisse", which is French for "Swiss officer". At the beginning Victorinox made strong and simple knives for the Swiss soldiers. Later they also made knives for the Swiss officers, which were a bit more advanced (more tools), lighter and more elegant. Especially the knives for the Swiss officers became immensely popular and nowadays you'll find a wide range of Victorinox knives based on the original version. Amongst SAK enthousiasts the soldier knives are very popular too, just like its variations like the Farmer, Pioneer and Electrician. Enjoy your SAKs and be careful, for some people those Swiss army knives have become an addiction. :)
