Nice work, Vincent. Thanks for the efforts. I may try to reach them this week, if I get a chance during business hours.

Darn! Picked up 2 scientists and 2 yeomans on ebay. A few weren't in the best of shape. do I need another....;)

If you ever have need for special Swiss Army type products, one place that seems to have the hard to get items is FreePort Knives in Freeport Maine, good people and good shelf stock as well...

Tell Herb that G2 sent you!

ps
used to own a scientist, excellent knife!

For me:

1) I use the phillips a lot and this one has it on end
2) With the phillips on end, you don't need the little driver on top of the regular can opener, so the combo blade saves a layer
3) it's only 2 layer so it's real pocketable
4) I like the extras like the pen and the eyeglass screwdriver
5) I have about 30 vics so I had to have this one too :D

Ditto...:)

Having the phillips come out the end verses the back is a real big plus, also they one they use is about the handiest Phillips screwdriver I've ever used, down to even real tiny screws it still fits and works very well...

bingo!

That's exactly the reason I chose the Scientist - I wanted both corkscrew and Phillips driver in the slimmest package possible.

This meant the Phillips had to be in the handle as opposed to the more common corkscrew replacement.

I then found that the Phillips could be used at right angles to the handle for more torque, or in-line for more reach and quicker turning - it was because the tang heel was squared off (as opposed to the more usual round) to allow for these two angles - so it was a deliberate design.

I also like the "combo tool" which combines a flat screwdriver, can-opener, bottle-opener and wire-stripper all in one blade. This had the basic functionality to replace the usual 2 separate can-opener and bottle-opener tools - which made the knife one backspring slimmer.

I used to laugh that I had a magnifying glass and often wondered what else could be put in its place - but with the on set of age and eye-sight, it's no longer a joke - more like a necessity.......

So you could almost say - I grew into the Victorinox Scientist ;)

I found some of my older catalogs, and thought some might be interested in the ones that show/list the Scientist:

This is an "intenational" Victorinox leaflet I picked up in Hong Kong circa 1988'ish -

here's the Scientist detail:

This a Forschner (now known as Swiss Army Brands) the official US importers of Victorinox - leaflet from about the same period late 80's early 90's

Finally this a loose page from Victorinox that I received from them direct in Jan/1993:

For those sharp eyed among you will have noticed that the last page (circa 1992/3) lists a straight Pin as one of the tools - that was round about the time when Victorinox started to put a Pin in the handles just by the corkscrew pivot.

1993 was also when I found that the Scientist was discontinued as a US import (but was still made by Victorinox)

I believe the Scientist model had now been discontinued by Victorinox themsleves, so is no longer made.

So do any of you guys accumulate old catalogs?
Do you have any ones that are interesting and care to show us please?

A gentleman on ebay sent me a copy of an 80's Victorinox brochure with some of the discontinued models. I don't have a scanner but if you email me I'll send you a copy.

Very cool:cool: and many thanks Frank - that's very generous of you - I am definitely taking you up on this.

One of the best catalogs I've ever seen was actually a Swiss Army Brands (aka Forschner) one on the Victorinox SAK - circa 1996.

It was very well done, elegant and well presented.
I was most impressed when I first got it,
and still remain impressed some 7 years later.

If I get a chance to do some scanning I'll post some sample pages in a new/separate thread.

As I've just done some more scanning - just for completeness here's the front of that Victorinox "international" pamphlet I picked up circa 1988 in Hong Kong:

I've posted more catalog pages in another thread:

Knife Catalogs

If you have any older or interesting knife catalogs or adverts, please show us?

I got the photocopies Frank very kindly sent me -
he was also very generous in enclosing 3x P-38 can-openers -
many thanks Frank.

I've updated the thread:

Knife Catalogs

with some scans of the photocopies Frank sent - there are some interesting discontinued models.
