In Cambodia in 1992, the then CBS Rome Bureau Chief gave me a old Swiss Champion straight from his pocket after a team member lost my knife in the field. Since then, that knife has travelled with me across much of the world, in the field and not. It has much sentimental value. After two decades of rough travel and hard use, it was showing beyond normal wear and tear, had a few bent tools, and was missing the tweezers and scissors spring. Rust spots had even formed on some liners and tools. I sent it off to the Victorinox Service Center in Monroe, CT with a $5 check (required for return shipping) and a note explaining it had sentimental value and that I wanted the bent tools corrected/replaced, missing parts replaced, rust removal and spa treatment, and that I'd send more funds when notified of cost. Within three weeks knife was returned corrected and clean and with a extra tweezer but no further charges. Received the knife back this week. Big thumbs up to Victorinox.

I've had to send a SAK in a few times for a problem, mostly due to years of wear, or carelessness on my part of asking too much of a folding pocket tool. In both cases, the Victorinox service was outstanding. Even in the case of my using the screw driver to pop the bead off a BMW motorcycle tire while fixing a flat. Totally my fault, and I was willing to paay for my mistake. Instead, Victorinox just repaired the bent screw driver and sent the knife back. I carried a couple of 12 inch tire tools after that.

I had two SAKs that I sent them with dim LED lights. I removed the toothpick and tweezers from both and sent them in with the required shipping. They replaced the LED bulbs and also replaced the toothpick and tweezers and the scales, and also returned the old scales.

Several years ago I broke off the can opener and bottle opener on an old SAK opening oysters. I sent it in and they replaced both free of charge.

I now own a bunch of SAK knives. One is in every room in the house and and one is always with me wherever I go.
