Today I was in the local Target store and, per habit, wandered through the sporting goods section. I discovered that they had the Vic Soldier marked down to only $9.99. Needless to say, one came home with me. Victorinox may not use the latest, greatest steel, but they are VERY consistent in their quality. I can think of a few American slipjoint manufacturers who could learn a few lessons from Victorinox.

Now the only problem is that I may have to go back for another one, my Knifeknut 13 yr old son likes it a lot.

Headed to a target tomorrow... I find that I use the can opener a lot... All the wing turning types never last more than a few weeks...

Yeah, the can opener is one of the things I use the most on my SAKs, although when I don't have a SAK on me I use the P-38 that is on my keychain.

The first thing I used this for was with the caplifter to open a bottle of Bulldog root beer after doing some yard work today (it wasn't too bad, it cooled down to about 98 today). And tonight the first thing my son used it for was to open the packaging on a video my wife bought (The Gods Must Be Crazy).

Good catch on the knife
Good root beer
Very good movie
Sounds like a good time was had by all.
Sometimes simple pleasures are the best.
Enjoy.

Sorry if it's off topic, but if anyone else goes could you see if the "old" Leathermans are still on sale. Thanks guys, I appreciate it a lot :)

I remember when I got my Tinker from Target during one of their other sales a few months ago for $4.98 :D

Rugger - I didn't know that bulldog was available that far east, it is a local (Fresno) brand, named after the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Powells85 - I'll check tomorrow, I'm going back for another one. My son now has permanent possession of the one I got. He's only 12, but for his birthday this month his wish list includes a Buck Rush (ATS-34 version), Spyderco Lum Chinese, Buck Mayo, and several Dozier knives, fixed and folding. He also likes the Mnandi and the William Henry carbon fiber series. Somebody needs to get a job.

lambertiana,
In re: the Bulldog, I've not tried it myself, but it comes very highly recommended from a trusted source ;)

I use a Victorinox Soldier for EDC. What a great little knife! :)

I got mine on sale at Target for $13.77 a few months ago. Wish they where that low then.

Rats! I went back today to get another one, since I lost the first one to my son, and they were all gone. It was labeled as a closeout, so I am out of luck. I also didn't see any of the older leathermans there, just a few of the new small models (the mid-size ones with the colored handles).

Rugger - you should try some Bulldog. I have tried numerous brands of root beer, from major national brands to many local brands, and Bulldog is one of my two favorites (the other is Henry Weinhard).

===============================

I can't think of any American slipjoint manufacturer that couldn't learn a few -- no, make that a bunch of -- lessons from Victorinox.

powells85 - I was wrong, I was just there and saw a Leatherman PST for $25. If I didn't already have a Wave it would be tempting.

Thanks, I went there and they're pretty much out of all of their LMs except one of the juice models.
