Victorinox Soldier vs. Camillus Camp Knife?

I've been thinking of picking up a soldier lately because I'm always reading good things about them. I was just wondering how the Camillus camp knife compares. It seems to be the same basic concept except I think it is slightly larger. I never see anyone mentioning the camp knife and just wonder if they are as good as the soldier.

also is the Vnox pioneer the same as the soldier only with red handles? It looks to be the same but most websites I've seen it on give the length as 3 5/8" instead of the soldiers 3 1/2". Is the extra 1/8" from the keyring attachment?

thanks in advance,

Jamie

I think the soldier.

you should have posted in wilderness survival forum it would have got more attention.

things get bogged down here sometimes.

Go with the soldier, or pioneer, basically same knife. (I didn't think there was a difference in length). The key ring on mine is situated perpendicular to the knife handle so it does not extent the lenght of the knife. For the money the V-Nox is a great bargain with a lot of features and a rock solid reputation. If you want to attach to a lanyard go with the pioneer, if not soldier is fine.

I would also recommend the Victorinox Soldier or the Wenger Standard Issue. These are the models issued to the actual Swiss Army.

If you are in an urban setting go with the soldier. If you go in harms
way go with the Camillus military all stainless steel camp knife.

I carried a military issued Camillus camp knife all thru S.E. Asia
in the '60's then for several dcades after that. As good as the Victorinox
is it would not have survived harsh military duty. The Camillus will
never fail you when you need it most.

Another vote for the Soldier. If you search on the test forum you will even find a comparative evaluation of the Victorinox and the Wenger ones.
The Pionerr is exactly the same length and the the protruding part holding the key ring is very sharp and was biting in my palm even after rounded the edges with a file. Because of that I prefer the Soldier.
I have no experience with the Camillus knife but I like better the can opener design on the Soldier.

I'll also give a vote for the Victorinox Soldier, based entirely on the review and test done by sgtmike88. I read the review, bought one and have been happy ever since. As said above, search for and read the thread, it was a good review.

I think for the price, you get a well-made everyday user knife that doesn't scare most folks these days. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that V-nox knives are the best value, dollar for dollar, made today. How about that? There is always one in my pocket, in addition to another lockblade (BM usually).

I picked up a Camillus camp knife, literally -- it was lying on top of a mailbox. Figuring that someone unfamiliar with knives might take it and accidentally hurt himself or herself, I took it home for safe keeping. It's a good, tough all stainless knife that cries out, 'Abuse me!' It's more crudely made than the Swiss models, but if you're doing something nasty like prying tires beads off the rim (OK, use the proper tool, I know) or cutting up linoleum, or cardboard boxes, it'll do the job. Won't hold an edge spectacularly well, but good enough. I think they provide these to Marines for field use.

Get the Soldier or the Pioneer (or the Wenger Standard Issue).
You will not regret it.

I like Camillus knives alot and I own several, but I am really disappointed with this military folder. Maybe it's due to military budget constraints, but it has terrible fit-and-finish and has rather shoddy construction altogether IMO.

Go out and personally handle them both and then make your decision.

Of course, they're rather inexpensive, so you could buy both and then post a comparison here on the forums (hint, hint)...

Good luck,
Allen.
