So i just recently bought a swisschamp with red cellidor scales. Well i decided that i didn't like the plastic scales after they looked like crap after a day and the chisel chipped on some pine! So i gave it to my bro and ordered a hardwood. Do you think the absence of the ballpoint pen and the addition of the hardwood scales is worth it? Is the pen really all its cracked up to be? I can't see myself pulling it out in public and i dunno. Opinions!

I used the pen on my Explorer Plus just once in the past 18 months or so. It is nice to have on you at all times, but its really just there for those rare, rare occasions I think. But I still like to have it, just in case.

If you always carry a real pen and never forget it, the loss of the pen on your SAK becomes moot.

I don't really ever carry a pen, nor do I ever write, and if i have to, theres a pen near by lol. I bought this as an EDC so. I got the

Any suggestions as to whatelse to carry?

Just the way Victorinox chooses to sell them. I emailed them a couple years back with that question and they were pretty vague as to the reason. Though I think the wood scales, hardwood and rosewood, are not as easy to design that way. Might be a cost issue. Another way is to look for someone that does mods on saks. But that'll cost you more. Myself,I have a hardwood champ and don't really miss the pen and pin. But I normally carry the celidor versions anyway. Try the hardwood out,and carry a small pen in a pocket. Or you could always try carrying a Swisscard by Victorinox, has a pen and pin.

I'm only guessing, but wouldn't the long slot for the pen make the wooden scale quite weak and easy to break, either in manufacture or in use?

Meh. I talked to them this morning about shipping costs because i realized theyre in New Hampshire and i'm in connecticut so no point in paying extra shipping costs and they told me i ordered a red one instead of a hardwood. So i asked if they had any other colors and i in turn got a ruby one. Looks sweet! Thats what i originally wanted because red is played out. Sweeeet. Came to $78.95 shipping and knife. Knife was 70.95 and shipping was (do the math).
