Hey everyone, I'm off to Maine soon so I was wondering If i should bring my swisstool. I have the original and I havent even used it yet. I also bought a Buck 110 which I am debating on bringing (both i have had for a while in the collection, just never used them because i figured i'd save them for a time like this). So, i'm wondering a couple things. I know it's a very well made tool, but do the knife blades hold a nice edge under normal work/carving or do I need to pack a sharpening system? Anything ever broken on it for any of you guys? Was it under stress or normal work? Anything else you can throw in to make me more confident in the tool would be cool.

What are you doing in Maine?

If you are going to be using the blades regularly, you may want to bring a fine grit stone with you. The blades are fairly soft. But they will quickly take a good edge.

I'd say the SwissTool is pretty much bomb proof but I have heard some claims that the awl and flat drivers were bent after using them as pry bars-- that's abuse though.

I'm going to maine with my girlfriend for a little over a month just as a get away. Plan on doing a lot of hiking, some hunting maybe and fishing. Don't know much about the madison area so i have no idea what else there is to do! But i'm an outdoors type person. I always loved the blades on my swiss army knives and these seem to be about the same so we'll see. Theyre surgical steel right?

Trust me on this , the Swisstool can take some very heavy use . Now while I have bent a tool through abuse ( only a slight bend and I used another swisstool to straighten it and now you cant tell ) I have never broken one and I have really cranked down on them .If anyone has ever read some of my posts on http://forum.multitool.org/index.php you will know what mine has been through .
Blade steel is the same as other Victorinox saks and although it doesnt hold an edge like S30V it is very easy to sharpen .I would take both
