I have numerous SAKs, Up until now, all have been made by Victorinox, however, I recently bought a Wenger Ranger. Gave it an initial sharpening with my Sharpmaker; it took an outstanding edge. A couple of hours later I noticed fingerprint rust marks....a very slight patina of rust. This has never happened with the Vnox knives. I'm wondering if the Wengers have a higher carbon content? Does anyone know? I don't mind the little bit of extra maintenance if they do...especially because I think higher carbon knives take a better edge, but I'm just surprised because I assumed that they were both made of virtually the same steel. Thanks

I'm not for sure, but I do believe Wenger uses a higher carbon stainless steel than Vic does. Wengers do seem to hold a slightly better edge than Vics also. Although I perfer Vics over Wengers but thats a personal preference.,,,VWB.

Victorinox now owns Wenger, but perhaps each still maintain the unique steel composition .. I heard that since the buy out, Wenger QC has improved a lot.

Kinda strange how a simple question about steel gets pushed all over the map and now we're into watches more than knive/steel. I do really appreciate the responses, but does anyone know anything for sure about the steel? The Wenger Ranger I bought is no longer in production. Not sure when it was made. But the quality in general seems equal to Vnox that I'm used to. It's a long single blade, nearly four inches partially serrated. Locking. That's it, no tooth pick, no tweezers, nothing but the blade. Again, thanks to anyone who may know the answer to my question.
