Victorinox Wood Saw: Thickness difference

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone noticed this too, but I just realized that the wood saw on the Vic's with liner locks (e.g. Trekker, Forester, Trailmaster, Soldier) is thinner than the ones from the Vic's with slide locks (e.g. Hunter, Hercules). Did anyone notice this? And does anyone have any good explanation why the supposed-to-be more robust kinves (the ones with liner locks) have thinner wood saws?

I guess it just doesn't make sense to me because in terms of the knife blade itself, the liner locks seems to have the thicker profile, specially at the tang area, as compared to the ones with the slide lock... but then they have the thinner wood saws.

Can anyone explain?

Thanks.

Oh I'm not talking about the thickness of the steel, but more of the thickness of the profile of the wood saw. The wood saw in liner locks are as thick as the ones in the slide locks when looking at it from the spine. But looking at it from the side, there is a noticeable thickness of the profile in favor of the slide lock wood saws.

Only a guess, but maybe the section is thinner to reduce drag caused by friction. Because the only 111 mm SAK I own is an OH Trekker, I can't make a comparison.

I never noticed this before but you now have me wondering so I think I'll take look at mine and compare.

Okay please do. And afterwards, tell me what you think.

Right now, I'm thinking that they made the profile thinner for the liner lock wood saws so that you can have more space for pressing the liner lock when you want to unlock it. I realized that they may have made it curve down instead of the straight spine of the slide lock wood saws, just so the "press button" of the liner lock is not partly covered.

That's just a theory though.

I haven't had a chance to look yet but I hopefully can very soon. I'll be in touch when I do.

bump it up - I'm curious about this too. Here are some stock photos

If anyone has a slide lock and liner lock with a saw and could do a side by side comparison shot, I'd really appreciate it. I have a Forester and while the saw works great, a little bit larger profile would be nice if it's really there.

Someone email me so I have it on my phone and I'll do a photo for you. I'm very forgetful at times. :(

Someone emailed me and reminded me so here's the pics.

I can't really tell a thickness difference looking at them but touching them the outrider slide lock saw feels thick.

Yeah that's the one I started this thread for.
Any ideas, other than the one I said, why they would put a smaller profile on the liner lock wood saw?

I'm not sure it make sense for just a few grams but it could be just to save some weight. The liners add some weight so maybe shaving down the spine of the saws helps keep the difference between the slidelocks and linerlocks within reason.
