I have been thinking about my next Victorinox. I have enough money for a climber and a hiker. Which should I choose and where should I buy?

Get 'em used and you can afford both. Easy to find because they get lost/ airport impounded by the hundreds.

You'd think someone who chose to name himself MRVictorinox would know what Vic would be mist suited to the tasks he needed to perform. That's how one chooses one, isn't it?

Oh well. Get a Classic, Super Tinker, or Alox Far er.

What tools do you use while camping? Get the one that has those, like snow and steel said. I dont think theres a simpler kinda knife to pick out, MRVictorinox! :thumbup:

I find the Climber better suited to urban needs (I don't drink wine but the corkscrew holds a tiny screwdriver for my glasses), and the Hiker for outdoors use. If you're not sure which to pick, save a little more money (or look to the cheaper nylon handled models) and got for a Huntsman (Climber plus a saw) or Fieldmaster (Hiker plus scissors).

If you don't drink wine or need the small screwdriver, the Fieldmaster is a great choice for an all around SAK. If your need the corkscrew or the little screwdriver, then the Huntsman is for you. Price difference between a Climber, Hiker, Huntsman or Fieldmaster is really not that big. I just checked.

I'd pick option 3... the Super Tinker. Almost the tool set as the Climber, but it has a Phillips screwdriver instead of the corkscrew.

I use the real Swiss army knife, the original military issue "soldier". They were also sold later on as a "pioneer" for commercial sale but won't have the year or the military markings. It has exactly the tools that I will use several times a day, every day, and nothing more. I also like the aluminum handles - I've chipped and broken plastic handles so I prefer this. Mine from 1990, but here is one for sale from 2005 on ebay [not my auction, so I can't vouch for the seller but I IS the knife and there are several like it on ebay - please note this is the "old" style soldier. not the "new soldier;

Hope that helps.

Well given those two options and the fact that you our on a budget of sorts. I would suggest the Hiker, especially because you plan on camping with it. The tool set that comes with the hiker will for sure come in handy.
