I’ve given my wife a few knives over the years. Off the top of my head I can remember a khukuri, a Cold Steel Voyager, a SAK in addition to a few others I’ve forgotten. She hasn’t carried any of them, as she never saw the need.

Last night she told me that she is going to start eating a more healthy diet, more fruits and vegetables. She wants to try and eat a piece of fruit with lunch every day. The problem is that they don’t have any knives at work. I told her I had just the knife she needed. After a minute or two of rummaging through my secret stash I pulled out a French Laguiole. At 4.5” closed it’s big enough to use on any fruit smaller than a watermelon. After opening it up I handed it to her. Her eyes lit up. She hefted it and tested the edge with her thumb. “It’s perfect!” she said, just before she put it in her purse.

I was a little surprised by this new development. She’s commented in the past about how big some of my knives are. But when it came down to it, the knife she chose for herself was one of my biggest slipjoints. I’m not complaining though, at least now she understands the utility of having a knife around.

That should work much better than the khukuri :D

Maybe have her rotate so you can get a nice patina going on all your knives.

Having a wife appreciate cutlery must be awesome.

I wish mine did.

I wouldn't say she appreciates cutlery, but she does recognize quality. Thankfully she defers to me when it comes to knives. We had to choose a kitchen knife set recently, and I would've snapped if she suggested something like Cutco. On the other hand, we did end up paying more than I wanted as she chose the Kershaw Shun knives.

Ditto on that! After 25 years of marriage, my wife still ridicules my knife and gun habit.
Just lucky I guess. My wife was pretty excited when she saw the KHnutbuster that Kerry made me for our wedding. And she gave me my most treasured possession, my Springfield 1911.

Congrats on the victory! My wife from time to time uses the SAK Tinker that I got her a few years ago. She never tells me though when it needs to be resharpened so every once in a while I have to ask for it and take a look at it. But the fact she uses it enough for it to require resharpening is a victory I think.

You are very fortunate indeed to have such a thoughtful wife! My wife doesn't exactly get me things like that but she does not question them either. For example, she didn't mind the second Springfield XD I picked up a few months ago. So I consider myself fortunate as well. ;)

p.s. Congrats on your 2000th post!

My wife has a Leatherman Micro on her keychain, but every time she needs a knife, she asks me. I guess it's no different than me always asking her for a Tylenol that I know she carries in her purse.

With 4 kids around, a knife is constantly needed to open something, drill a hole in the top of a chocolate milk lid for a straw, dig out a sliver, etc.

On a road trip to Texas for my brother's wedding last year, my Spyderco Manix (easier for her to open with fingernails than most slipjoints) sat in the center console for her to use on her crochet project. She was making stocking caps for friends with a new baby on the way.

Kinda rambling, but I guess the point is that sometimes they appreciate the utility of a knife without going to the "effort" of carrying themselves.

I am very lucky.

My lady friend travels back and forward to NYC and acts as my courier for my purchases.
She finds it 'cute' that I enjoy collecting knives so much, and has great fun watching me open the new knives!

She carries a Queen Classic Stag Peanut, which she is totally thrilled about.
