I covered the MAJOR points of these tapes very briefly on my " Silat Anyone?. " post in answer to JRF's question for a good "overview" tape on Silat.

However I mistakenly thought that these were among the tapes that Dave Fulton wrote he going to review.

So to add a couple of MINOR points:

1. You might recognize the "attacker" on Guru Plinck's tape, he's the fellow that gives Marc "the animal" a hard time on his "Surviving a Knife Attack" tape.

2. Guru Orlando has an intelligent and engaginly wicked sense of humor. Guru Plinck comes across as humble, extremely dedicated and someone you don't want to mess with.

3. GET BOTH TAPES!

Maybe Dave does have them in his collection, though he didn't mention them; In any case I'd appreciate hearing the opinions of Silat/Kali and other MA's who've seen these two tapes.

Another positive aspect of Guro Orlando's video is that it meshes with what he shows in his book. Some might say that is bad, because it is the same info twice, but I think this is positive. You can see the movements in the book in still form with the breakdowns and commentary, and then you can watch it at speed and see the flow. There are of course also many new movements and variations on the tape, but as he points out they are not as important as the underlying principles of combat that he shows are.

Both very good tapes! Although I did like Bob Orlando's tape as far as being instructional. If nothing else, get the Bob Orlando book from Paladin Press... one of the absolute best martial books I have ever seen....IMO. I have a review of his book on my freshly updated web-site at....

I believe that is Don Pentecost. Don also has a book out from Paladin Press titled...
"PUT 'EM DOWN, TAKE 'EM OUT!-Knife Fighting Techniques from Folsom Prison"

Kev, the guy on MacYoung's knife series is Richard Dobson. Don Pentecost looks different I believe unless he did a pen name thing.

Ok I really like both tapes but Bob Orlando has a great sense of humor as well. His teaching style is easy to follow and hes got personality..Is all that important? yes, especially in an art like Silat where attitude and approach can make a big difference in the ability to teach/ instruct the feeling of the art to another..
I highly recommend both these tape..
