I have done no knife dissasembly but want to do so. Would like to start the M2 and remove the "red safety" button which simply makes it take me longer to close the blade.

If it's anything like the manual LAWKS safety (I'm assuming the red button is the auto version) then removing it will cause there to be some play in the blade at the pivot screw. If you remove it you'll likely need a washer of the same dimension packed in there to keep things tight.

Thanks I had not thought about having to replace the washer. Actually it is the LAWKS system. Any advice for a good online source for washers, and other various parts?

I just go to my parts box of knives that I bought and decided were crap, or had the lock fail etc. Problem with the LAWKS is that it needs a largish washer and (I'm going on memory here) it actually knocks out around the ball detente for the lock. My advice is to learn to love it, they don't make it easy. Putting a smaller diameter washer in there still leaves the blade wobbly.

why not just grinding the part that goes under the lock and the small lever, just leaving the "washer" part.

I removed the LAWKS system on my m16 and it did make the blade very wobbly, so I left the LAWKS system in there but took out the spring that automatically engages it.

That way there's no blade play and the only way the LAWKS system locks is if I manually engage it

i took the autolawks out of two of my crkts, both were not wobbly, i have never removed a regular lawks so it could wobble as mentioned, if you are not patient or have not taken apart very many knives, dont take yours apart, practice with some cheapos to get the hang of it first.
