Here is a video of my very beginner use of the DMT Aligner. So far I'm very happy with the system, and am enjoying the razor sharp results.

Yeah a friend of mine got one. For the price the results are amazing. Speed of reprofile was pretty good, could be better with the additional coarser stones as you have bought. But I think the angles do not go shallow enough, I just use the lowest setting all the time.

As to the quality of the DMT 'guide' :

Am wondering if the guide of DMT is something I could use.
Am comparing it to Lansky's. The clamp of my new Lansky system is not holding the blade particularly well

I'm starting to reprofile several knives -- and don't know how long th' business is supposed to take. --But I *do* want the blade to not slip around so much :(

Again, what quality could I expect in the DMT guide itself.

Could things be improved with a pad (thin wool .. ) between the blade (spine) and surfaces of clamp jaws?

** Note: I.e. jig + holes for a rod. //cheers

Just use painter's tape or masking tape on the part of the spine where the jaws of the clamp, clamp down.

One thing that's worked well for me, for keeping the blade from slipping, is to use a piece of med/fine grit wet/dry sandpaper (400-800 grit or so), folded over the blade spine with the grit side OUT (against the clamp), and the paper backing to the blade. Really seems to hold it well, and I've used that on all three of my Lansky, Gatco and Aligner clamps.

Also, make absolutely certain your clamp is completely flush to the blade, while tightening it down.
