I'm not sure if this is the place, or photography is better, but let's give this a try

I am able to download some youtube videos in AVI, WMV FLV formats

Sometimes you see an interesting idea or thing in that video, but it's three minutes of an hour long video

I would love to be able to edit that video into a simple little minute or three long clip so I can remember why I saved it and get right to what I'm looking at.

Is there a free, simple to use software that does this and works on all those formats ?

I tried windows movie maker and I'm just getting blank screen on the saved videos.

There is a list here, help me pick one

Ilm using Windows Vista right now

Or is this WMM going to work for me and I just need to learn how ?

Can you import youtube videos ? I found this in some WMM wiki:

Importing of other container formats such as MP4/3GP, FLV and MOV, MIDI, AIFF, AAC and SWF are not supported even if the necessary DirectShow decoders are installed.

Looking at the list of free software, I'd try Avidemux.

I'll give it a try, but the comments mention crashing often for large files.

Can anyone tell me, what's the high dollar standard in video editing software, what is the photoshop of video ?

Adobe Premiere has been around for several years, there is other software available but is cost prohibitive for everyday use (for many people).
