Figured I could at least get one visitor to the thread if I mentioned a red GW, haha.

While you guys were at Blade, having a blast, I went to the family cottage up in the mountains right behind my house.
The weather was excellent (and now it's raining again, LOL).

In the end of this post there's a video of me making a whistle from a twig.
I call it "emergency whistle" since I am nearly 32, and can't just fool around like a kid anymore. The things I do must have some substance!
(but feel free to call it anything you like).

Right, on my way to the cottage:

My parents came for dinner, so I fired up the makeshift fireplace.

Even though I brought a couple knives, the GW saw the most use this weekend.

Another of Chuddybear's creations (yep I dropped it in the stream:thumbup:):

Allow me to digress for just a moment, when I had spent a couple days at the cottage I went home and down to the fjord to try my fishing luck.
Caught a little cod, which became yesterdays dinner (quite yummy)

Allright, just some scenery pics I snapped while I was in the mountains, and I'll get back to the whistle.

Then to the video, the first one is the complete making of a whistle from a twig of a rowan tree (sometimes called "Mountain Ash" in North America?).
It's kinda long, 9:42, and it is not very much action in there (just me whittling until I have a functional whistle).

This is a short version not showing any of the making, just the twig (start) and the whistle (finish).

I apologize for my lack of embedding skills (I make up for it with excellent whistle-making skills, LOL)
Next time I'll do it with a Swamp Waki!

ETA: Vimeo screws up the aspect ratio, but the original file is downloadable from the video site.

Thanks guys, yeah it's a great place to be (and this time of year it never gets dark here).
The scenery spans from mundane to wild within a square mile.
I didn't see much wildlife this weekend, just an eagle, a frog, and some lizards LOL.

stricknine, it's a dream of mine to go to Blade someday, it would be very cool
I'm just lousy when it comes to planning ahead.

NP, yeah, the GW is great! I put a mirror edge on this one right after I got it, still as sharp as ever.

Found some time. COOL VIDEO!

I'm off to go find some new growth branches!
Go get 'em, and post pics of your brand new (and free!) emergency whistles

I used Rowan in this video, but that's just because it's the only tree at that altitude that is suitable (thick bark that lets loose from the wood without problems after softening a bit with the spinewhacking).
I usually use a kind of willow due to plentyness and the mere fact that the whistle (or flute if you like) then gets its proper name in Norwegian: Seljefløyte.
Turkeys and codfish both fear the Sus Scrofa :D

To anyone that has not made one yet, I promise you it's very therapeutic :p
(it didn't show in the video, but I also had a glass of Akevitt right by my side)
