Okay, I can't remember the title for this tape.
We're treated to a late night class taught by Eddie Jafri with Greg Alland as cameraman only.
Jafri starts with a demo of common wristlock type knife defenses saying the aren't practical and contrasts them with Silat defenses.
You may have read about knife vs knife between two men inside a sash. Well you get to see a demo of it with Jafri and the same assistant. The Indonesian Sash has about a 4 ft circumference. The assistant was a bit..surprised. Anyhow, we see two demonstrations of ice pick vs ice pick involving evading, throwing, throwing out the knife and taking down the opponent. The sash working against the person thrown. Jafri calls it 'Close fighting', joking about the seriousness of it without degrading it.
Next are 4 empty hand defenses against knives and a demo of Jafri against 3 knife wielding opponents. Following is an elbow drill taught in four sequences, another hit added and brief application shown later.
Like knives? Well, six ice pick drills are next with Jafri explaining the vital points briefly with descriptions of stabbing and slashing eyeballs and mouths and such.
Not enough? We're treated to more knife fighting, actually knife fighting and ground work. Jafri also shows empty hand knife defenses on the ground. Both sections involving takedowns.
More? Hmm, knife counters to locks is next complete with groin grabbing, nerve hits, throws. One counter defies description, let's just say it ends up on the ground.
We also see a mix of light (minimal contact) knife sparring to show footwork as well as some formalized empty hand sparring, Jafri playing with students. Jafri executes some odd angle shots like ankle stabbing and a falling down ice pick strike to the groin.
The class ends with Jafri telling some life stories, one of which involves him carrying five kris daggers. Greg Alland adds an ending narration, commenting on Silat as we see the students practice.
Well, I liked the tape entirely. Jafri's humor compliments his seriousness and skill with a dagger. Primarily, an ice pick tape, the knife and ground fighting was informative though some sequences seemed hard to pull off including the earlier multiple opponents situation.
Jafri's philosophy on hands vs a knife
"If someone pulls a knife on you, break him."
"If someone strikes you, cut his hand. I don't care what martial art he is, cut him."
Oh yes, the tape is about an hour.
