Last week I posted a review of my 2010 Scagel Medium Hunter found here:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=801900

However, sometimes video provides a much better presentation of how a knife behaves. So a couple days later I made - yet another bowdrill - video using this knife. I think the video does a good job showcasing how the blade handles itself in this most bushy of bushy applications.

I'll re-iterate that the knife feels very nicely controlled in the hand given the size of the blade and that handle is wonderful in the winter time. I didn't even notice the guard. Usually I mutter things under my breath of things that piss me off about a given blade when shaping a kit and none of the usual swear words came to surface! I really am falling for this blade as one of the all-rounders!

Hope you folks enjoy.

Thanks for the vid, Ken. I'll check it out when I have a little more free time. :)

Very nice. I like this knife a lot. Does the metal bead part on the end bug you at all? It seems as if it may limit banging on the pommel if necessary.

That is a small lanyard ring which is screwed to the tang of the knife. It apparently is part of the Scagel style that was copy forwarded into this model. Yep, it would interfere with using the pommel to pound on things. I haven't ever used a knife that way before as I would likely use a rock or baton instead, but this would be one limitation not unlike the lanyard extension put on the BRK&T fox river.

Thanks for your comment Rockywolf!

Thanks for the response, Ken. I like to bop my hand on the back of the handle to seat or unseat the blade upon occasion. I am sure I could find a different way if I owned one of these.

Good stuff Ken. I am really enjoying the videos you have been putting up. What jacket are you wearing? Your lightweight Swaandri or something else?... it almost looks like the Columbia Wool series.

Rick

Leather stacked handles are considered to have stick tangs... though the thickness of the stick varies by maker.

There are leather scaled knives that have a full tang.

Thanks Rick, I was wearing the Columbia Outlet $22 wool jacket that was on special a while back. From our last trip together, my blue swanndri smells like smoked fish :D :D Gotta try to hand wash that thing now and stay away from the cooking fire smoke a bit more next time!

On the tang. Mike Stewart was kind enough to post a picture of the tang of the medium and new large bowie Scagels on the Scagel sponsor site over at the other forum. I hate pinching folks pictures, but will direct people who are interested in the knife over that way. The knife is a stick tang, but the tang is nicely radius'd to relieve stress. Plus that tang is .217" thick. This one should be plenty tough!

Rick, those leather slabbed knives you were doing for awhile were really nice. I liked how tacky the leather was to the palm.

Hey man.... I didn't bring that stuff... now, if it smelt like BBQ spam and curry noodles.... guilty. Hang it outside in the sun if you don't want to wash it.

KGD can you post a link to those pics and info on the new Large Scagel.

Wildmike, click my name to e-mail me and I'll return back the link. I don't want to do the cross-forum linking thing here.
