It's all about the 'stache dude. It's all about the 'stache. 
I've seen footage of video paparazzi approach Mr. Elliot outside a grocery store, and he seemed like a very cool, laid-back, friendly guy as he answered the camera mans questions.
Many years ago, when the cable E channel was new, they had a show, I think it was called "Q&A". It was a simple format where celebrities at random events were asked the same questions. In one episode one of the questions asked was "What one item do you always carry with you?". Mr. Elliot was one of the celebs asked that question, and his answer was "A knife". I remember Peter Coyote gave the same answer.
Sam Elliot is one of those actors whose mere presence always makes a movie better.
By the way, from what I read, the news of his death is untrue. But we'll see.
