Hey was checking out Knifecenter.com NEWS section, where they indicate a redesign of the Viele may be available in a few months. Any details on what the redesign may incorporate?

Does this mean the Viele will now have screws holding it together instaed of those rivet/pin thingys?

Hmmm...guess I'm glad I've held off buying a Viele for so long...and a VG-10 blade sounds great!

(anything to make a great knife better!)

Dan - Sorry, we'll still use the pins to hold it together.

Chinook - That is a question right now as VG-10 raises the MSRP $10 or $15 at the retail level. Opinions?

I would be willing to pay the extra for the improvements you have already mentioned which increase the longevity of the lockwork. The added value of the better steel would seal the deal for me, and would be my #1 next purchase.

Butt then, the Viele is a favorite of mine already.

VG 10 is definitely worth another $10 or $15 dollars. I have always said that the Viele is too classy a knife to have onlty average steel.

Sal:
The additional $10 to $15 wouldn't be too much for a blade steel that would match the rest of the design, as VG-10 would.

I've always liked and wanted a Viele, but had doubts about the stability/durability of the stop pin, liner lock, etc., esp. for the price. I'm looking forward to seeing any improvements to these areas, because the overall craftsmanship on these knives is top-rate.

I've looked at them several times at gun shows. The number one reason I haven't bought is because I was unwilling to spend that much money on a knife with AUS-8 steel. VG-10 (like my new Shabaria) would be great.

VG10, yes, yes ,yes. My Viele is one of my favourite knives and IMHO has a unique position in the Spyderco line-up, there is no other knife which is quite as elegant. However I don't carry mine all that often, mainly because I'm worried about lock wear. With the redesigned lock and better blade steel it will certainly go on my wish list (after the Chinese Folder of course

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Shoot yeah, I think VG-10 is worth that very minor price increase. Go for it Sal!

Living life "on the edge"

The Viele has a mystique surrounding it, and non-edgy types always compliment it's looks, kind of like a classic car, etc...I think VG-10 is an excellent choice, especially with smaller bladed knives...

Sal,

Big Thumbs Up for a VG-10 Viele, It is definitely my favorite Spydie of all and re-designing it without "upgrading" the blade's steel is a waste. You've probably saw old posts begging for a better steel for that excellent design.

One request though: If you decide not to go for the VG-10, Consider AUS-10 but please please don't settle for ATS-55 - I hate it (and ATS-34)
