New to this site and hope I'm in the right forum. If I'm not will a mod please move the message to the correct forum. I have a Gerber MkII that was sent to me in 1969. Serial no. is 71xx. The blade is perfect but I cold blued it to a blue gray, the colors are all there on the grip but the texturing is worn smooth, sheath is the one that came with a steel but the steel is gone and overall the sheath is in good condition. Can someone give me an estimate of value?

I'm sending the knife back to war. Does anyone know of a maker of kydex sheaths that has a pattern for this knife that is set up to go on MOLLE gear. If not, would someone point me to maker that will do one custom.

without a pic to determine the condition its impossible to say, you probably lost some value by blueing the thing though, value to collectors anyway, they are gonna want it like it came from gerber with no mods FWIW, imho ya should not have done that.

Unless you are sending it out with someone that is aware of what they have, and is collector minded you have a potential of never seeing it again, or seeing it damaged.

I would rather send someone out with a less collectible, more easily replaceable and tougher knife. There are lots of suitable knives fairly inexpensive and easy to buy that are made out of steels like 1095, A2, 52100, 5160, and even S7 like the version of the Mk 2 you have. None of them are too valuable for a soldier to take to places where he may have to dump it, break, or lose it, maybe even have it stolen off his gear.

All to common occurrences in war zones. Good luck. Joe

SIFU1A,

Interestingly the "bluing" was done with a compound available from Gerber at the time. I agree that, nevertheless, it would negatively affect value. I would post a picture if I could but I'm technologically challenged. The only additional description I can offer is that the high edges on the guard and pommel show thining. Imagine a knife that was well cared for but carried everyday for over a year in all weather conditions etc. I realize that is a limited description but take a WAG. I would appreciate it.

Joe,

Your points are well taken. I'm going to give the young man a ZT folder as a utility knife and this one for what it is designed for. I was not a collector then and I am not a collector now. It's value to me lay in it's utility as it will for him.
