Hello all,
I just finished reading an interesting book called 15 Months in SOG: A Warrior's Tour by Thom Nicholson. He mentions that the main knife he carried while serving with SOG in CCN from 1968-1969 was a Buck field knife of some kind but never mentioned a model name or number. I was wondering if anyone here knows what type of Bucks were being produced and carried by our troops at that time. Links to pics would be especially helpful. Thanks in advance.

I think I read here that the 120 General was popular, though I've never met anyone who carried/owned one.

Thanks Chickentrax. Do you know what kind of sheath it had, eg did it have a snap type sheath? The author mentions carrying it upside down if that helps any.

Here's a link to a late model one...they are also available with wood grips...

Don't know about the sheath...these turn up on eBay quite a bit...all referred to as/or carried by Viet Nam based soldiers...

Here is the real deal 124 phenolic handle 1967 hole in the stainless steel pommel
also 120's general,s were popular.blade and handle were subject to breakage
on this type 124 as it was not full tang, moisture played havoc underneath
the phenolic handle .

they had flaps with snaps covering the knife handle about a third of the way down the sheath this was changed in 1970- 71 to an exposed handle with a swival belt loop and, unless treated the humidity and wet conditions made the sheath mildew.some guys carried upside down and others carried in backpacks
few carried on a belt.

Evil Eye Earl,
Thanks a lot for the info. Based on your posting it sounds like you were "over there". If so thanks a lot for what you did for our country.

No ... I was not there .... school ,huntin' and ridin' buddies.
One grunt ,one swabbie (SEAL), one boonie rat,he carried the 124 knife I described, later a Randall, jarhead(Navy term for Marine)sniper, later pilot, who also flew in Desert Storm.I here all types of stories from these guys, especially the boonie rat, duct tape was his friend.

EEE, thanks for the info, sounds like your friends would have a lot of interesting stories. Does anyone know if the 124 is still in production? I tried searching google earlier and got mostly ebay auctions, does that mean it's been discontinued?

Out of production since 1997 ,except for the 124LE 2006...not a full tang knife....I'm sure cost and only 141,000 made in 30 years haf something to do with Buck dropping it.

the 124LE is on the right
