I was just looking at the pic Andy posted of the Vietnam hawk and was wondering how the head is attached to the handle.
It appears to be sort of like what a typical hammer would have.

Thanks,
Kevin

The hawk in andys pic is a prototype and has a handle similar to a hammer handle because the production handles were not ready. The lock used is called a step lock and appears to be quite strong. It is attached with a wedge just like a hammer handle.

Hi Strabs! The handle and eye marriage is what we call a "Step Lock". The perimeter of the upper half of the eye is larger in circumference and diameter than the lower half...the wedge driven in from the top spreads the wood around the shelf in the middle, locking it into place on the step ridge...as if it were tapered.

It is a totally tough marriage and we have not seen any separation in the testing.
