Some years ago, I co-developed a concept with a well known cutler which ultimately gave rise to, and became known as, the "Variant"...a standard knife model afforded custom features, usually inspired and applied to the knife right at the grinding wheel...creating a one-of-a-kind creation based on a standard model. Call it Jazz Improvisation knifemaking...
Today, the "Variant" concept is being employed by several semi-custom cutlery shops to add some flavor to their product line.
Well, over the past few days, I tried it myself and found that I love doing it.
These Vietnam Tomahawk Variants are sole authored by me, and will be made available to our customers on a semi-regular basis.
Here are three examples in two different pictures...
The tiger stripe camo is done with a torch...handles are then waxed to secure the look and finish. Decorative tacs are placed on the handle under the inspiration of the moment. Sometimes, leather wraps and file work find there way onto the piece. The hammer poll VT Variant features extensive file work (hard to see in the pic) and serrations on the beard, as well as a completely torch blackened handle. No two pieces are alike, extending collectible quality and uniqueness to the Tomahawk.
Let me know what you think...
