I was just wondering what the general opinion on Swiss Army Knives is. I have a camper i got while i was in switzerland and i had it engraved "das tolle Messer" which means the greatest knife i dont think that now but it is still a great all around knife. Also do you prefer leatherman and/or gerber Multi tools over Swiss Army.

Let's get this one out of the way. Swiss Army knives are excellent knives. Myself, I favor Victorinox. They have great fit and finish, they are extremely useful and they don't scare people because they are almost universally known. As well, I use and trust Leatherman tools as they have never failed me when I needed them. I despise Gerber because of their poor quality, cheap steel and dubious "design" processes. Do I prefer Leatherman over Vics? No, I appreciate both. 'Kay?

Happy Holidays all!!

Love 'em both. Mainly, if I think I'm going to need pliers, I go with the Leatherman. Otherwise, a Vic SAK fits the bill.

I think most people (myself included) here prefer the Victorinoxes, but Wenger puts out a fine knife as well.

I agree, Victorinox Swiss Army multi-tool/knives are fantastic.

I NEVER leave home without my "Compact Series Rambler" which is permanently on my key chain! My "Huntsman" is never far behind either.

I wasn't much of a fan of SAK's until i bought my Alox Farmer. It has everything i need in an EDC/woods knife, and nothing i don't need.

I own one Gerber Multiplier (first production run), and several Leathermans of varying ages. However, my weekday EDC is a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker, and my WCC (weekend chore carry) is a Victorinox SwissTool. Not to get into a debate, but I vote with use. :)

I've only used Victorinox, so I can't comment on Wenger SAK's.

SAK's are working knives, period. Their INOX steel is super easy to sharpen and gets frighteningly sharp with little effort. The thin blades excel at cutting, especially soft materials. You can safely pry with the (usually) included bottle/can opener. Not to mention open wine, tighten screws, etcetera. Because their cost is a fraction of the New Tactical Knife of the Month, I think some feel as though they are 'disposable' tools. Not so! I love seeing pictures of 20+ and 30+ year old SAK's that have been carried and used everyday by their owner. They've been in space, the frigid Antarctic, everywhere you can think.

Both Leatherman and Victorinox make very robust, dependable multi-tools (Gerber, however, does not). Different animal than the humble SAK.

i have a "rucksack", with locking blade, does anybody have pictures of the inside?

btw i like saks i have several vics, my fav if a small alox soldier. unfortunately the blade is chipped, i didnt do any hard work with it either.

had a few V'Nox SAK's in the past, and then switched to Leatherman. they are simply the best "SAK's"......

by the way:

"das tolle Messer" means "the nice knife"

and "der tollest Messer" means "the nicest knife"

;)

Victorinox all the way. I never cared for the design and finish of Leatherman tools. At least the ones I've handled. I have a smaller Juice or whatever and the pliers easily get binded up with the small screw driver tools. When I try to get the screw drivers out they clump and often wack me almost to the point of drawing blood when I try to open them. The thing is a POS compared to a Victorinox multi-tool in my opinion. The one time the pliers were stuck so tight I was really having to work the tool to get them to pop free. When they did, the pliers sliced my palm and took a nice shaving of skin off. I never had design problems like this from a Victorinox product where the tools would jam up with each other.

SAKs are just so darn handy and they may be the greatest knife in the world to some. I have been using them for at least 25 years. VICs all the way. I have one of the original multipliers made by Gerber. It does just fine. I still have a Case knife that was my general purpose knife from when I was a kid. Good blade with some history. It has field dressed a few deer, skinned a few fur bearers, and done just about everything I could ask a pocket knife to do for me.

Wade, that's apples and oranges. the Juice is a sized-down LM for light-duty, the Swisstool is a tank. give LM another chance and buy a Charge or similar tough model.

my EDC is a vic huntsman, which I have reviewed here.

Vic also make a multi tool, called the Swiss Tool, which is more comparable to leatherman-esque tools.

I like them both. Leatherman's are great for the pliers, but personally I prefer the knife and tools on a Victorinox SAK to the tools on Leathermans for light duty. Each has their place and both are very well made.

I love Victorinox SAK's. They are high quality and affordable, and do a lot. And the warranty is good too. I EDC a Vic Spartan.

don't get me wrong, i did like my Vic Locksmith, but what i missed were pliers, one-handed opening and more easily reachable tools.

so, until i heard of Leathermans, my favorite multi's were Vic's, for sure. but once you go LM, you never go back :)

i had a LM Sidekick and a Wave 2003, both i gave away to my brothers, because.....mu current LM is the Charge Ti and it's my fave so far. if only they could make it lighter, it's still almost just as heavy as a Wave, even though it's got Ti-handles.

c'mon Tim Leatherman, 'enlighten' them multi's some more :)
