The village models have been on my mind since Uncle Bill wrote that there was supposed to be a shipment coming.

Uncle Bill sent a village model to Cliff Stamp that was so butt ugly he was ashamed to sell it.
Cliff worked that little knife over and it beat out several others including if I remember right an 18"AK.

I am sure that everyone here has looked at the pix on the H.I Website where the kami made a khukuri and the primitive conditions it was made in although I would like to have a building with a forge like that one.

The village kami's are under the gun so to speak to make high quality khukuris no matter how ugly they might be. The emphasis is on what the knife will do. And thier customers will come back with severe complaints if the knife doesn't meet the correct standards.

I have been wonderig what kind of steel the kamis come up with to make these high quality khuks.

I have also wondered if they might forge weld a piece of high carbon steel edge piece onto a softer piece of steel somewhat like has been done for hundreds of years when high carbon steel was a premuim.

Then again I have watched documentaries where some high quality blades were made in even more primitive conditions.
I have a Moro Sword that's very high quality and blades like these were made in the jungle with a charcoal fire and perhaps a rock for an anvil. I have read where some of those blades were very comparable to the famous old Spanish Toledo Steel that was at one time said to be the best in the world.

A lot has to be said for the village kamis and the tough khukuris they make. I gave my Dhankuta style village odel to my daughter in Phoenix for use in her landscaping business. I think she's afarid to use it though.

That was one tough knife as well!!

Any thoughts?

Khukuri FAQ

A little while ago I saw some pix of an itinerant blacksmithing setup -- I think it wasn't on www.netsword.com -- it was on one of the members' websites -- I'll poke around and see if I can find it again.... This fellow goes to Renaissance Fairs and sets up a tent and a blacksmith shop outside it -- apparently there were itinerant blacksmiths like that in many parts of the world, using only the tools they could transport in a wagon along with all their other possessions. When you think about it ... at least the village kamis can keep whatever tools they can accumulate and aren't limited to what they can travel with....

He has a little anvil with a spike on it to stick into a tree stump, and a solid shoulder so he doesn't keep driving it into the stump until it's buried. He uses a portable forge, too.

First, thanks for interesting info, Cougar.

Yvsa, that villager I sent to Cliff beat EVERYTHING around (including the HI 18 inch AK) in severe testing and it is still doing the job today as far as I know.

The village kamis prize the leaf springs but they shy away from the Indian Tata made springs. But, they will use whatever might be at hand if they know they can convert it into a good, tough blade. And, they will combine steels if high carbon is at a premium.

When Nara does our run for us we will carry some MB springs up to him for stock and will supply whatever else he might need.

Pakcik Bill.

Are Nara's considered as Village Models? I guess --- with MB spring steels --- Nara's will be The Best Village Models --- Come on Nara ... it is already August ... I hope you have finished with your crop ... have you start pounding the steel!

Hopefully Nara will get started this month but his production is limited so don't count on seeing a lot of Nara khukuris in the very near future. They will be coming over 3 or 4 at a time, I'd guess, and will be drifting in for several months.
