My villager short sword was waiting for me when I got home saturday evening, and to my wife's surprise I managed to restain myself from opening it until after dinner. She doesn't know I was unwrapping it with my eyes the whole time ;o) A friend, who was with me when I opened it, just sat there with his mouth open when he saw it. When he finally spoke, the first thing he said was "Wow!"
At 19" LOA with an 11/8 W x 3/8 T blade, I would have expected this knife to feel much heavier. However, it feels light and quick in my hand and easily changes directions in mid swing. The handle seems to flair more at the butt than other khukuris I've seen (mostly in pictures), which I really like because it makes my grip feel more secure. I have never seen a HI made khukuri, but would like to since Pala said the finish on this one is "good". Even so, I like the rustic finish on this one. The only visible flaw is a fold line that Uncle Bill seriously doubts will cause any problems except that it's ugly. What does an ugly man need with a pretty knife anyway ;o)
I hope to get a chance to do some chopping with it this weekend ... I've been wanting to ever since I opened the box. I'd like to get some ideas, from the more experienced khukuri owners here, for ways to test this knife. I'm not looking to kill it, I just want to make sure that everything is as it should be. I'd also appreciate any tips on sharpening and care since this is my first khukuri and first non-stainless blade.
Thank you to Pala and Uncle Bill for making such a nice knife available at an unbelievable price.
Sorry for the long post.
Dave.
