Vine filework and handle making tutorials

Excellent work Bruce! Finally a site that clearly explains it. Is it feasible with your method to put two thorns (one facing forward, the other back)?

Regards,

Hugh

Ugh!!!!!!!! I sure wish this had been available before I butchered, I mean carved that damascus bowie blade! Oh well, a little extra grinding and it might be salvagable. Very nice web page and instruction Bruce!!! Thanks!

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Thanks for that info Bruce. I especially liked the vine file work lesson. I'll be trying that one out in the future!

Bruce,

I'll NEVER, ever try to do that. But I'm darn glad you made the effort to put that artistic touch on my bowie.

I also do a vine file pattern however I like yours better. Have you ever tried using a half round instead of a triangle file?
It makes a neat pattern.

Hey Bob,I bet yours looks just as good as mine.No I havent tried using a half round instead of a triangle file, what size do you use.I know that you can use a half round instead of the full round and get the same results.does using the half round for the thorns give them a curved look? if so it sounds cool.....Bruce

Bruce! Thank you, a huge light-bulb just went on in my skull after I read your coffin handle tutorial. I never could figure out how the heck guy's could slide a full guard on over a handle that would be way to big for the slot in the guard. Thanks again!

I get lazy and use a Dremel to finish my file work, but I've found out with a little practice and trashing a lot of cut off disks and Dremel bits its well worth the effort.

I have tried the Dremal tool way,I never could get the cts to flow as well as with the files. And it was alot harder to control........Good luck,Bruce

Funny you should ask Bruce. I am starting a sub-hilt bowie tomorrow for a customer and I think with your method and my Mill I will be able to put a full guard as opposed to a half-guard on it. I will definitely post some picks when done. Thanks again.

3/16's,Good luck on the bowie,I think that you will find it a pretty easy project to make a handle like this. The neat thing about doing them is that you can have them completely finished before you attach them.Attaching bolsters or a sub hilt are very easy using this method....Good Luck,Bruce

Very nice addition to your site!!! You laid that out very clearly with the photos.

I have just recently pretty much gotten the vine down on spines and perpendicular spacers in the handle...BUT I never have figured out any rope patterns.

Wanna do that next???

Thanks!

Nick,The next blade that I have the opportunity to put a rope on I will gladly post it up.I am going to do a back to back arrowhead pattern on a skinner I am ready to finish, would you guys be interested in that also? How about one on hand rubbing the blade and other style guards and handles,Blade shapes.please let me know what you want to see and I will work on them.
Just remember that this is how I do things it's not the only way....Bruce
