vinegroon question

i want to make some vinegroon to try on leather and on some oak long bows that ive made. i know your supposed to use steel wool but i dont have any... what i do have is an unlimited amount of steel shavings from the band saw at school. if i fill a 1qt jar with vinegar how much shavings do you think i should use ?

1/2 cup should be plenty -- keep in mind it needs to be carbon steel shavings, not stainless for best effect.

Probably won't need quite that much shavings, but won't hurt. As mentioned, be sure they are carbon steel. Take a look at this thread, it'll give you lots of great info on using vinegaroon from a couple of top notch leather guys:

I'd say about 1/3 to half full jar of shavings and then fill with vinegar (the stronger the better).

thanks for the tips guys its for sure not stainless but im not sure what kind of steel it is
