I have a vintage medium Al Mar SERE model 3002-A. Bought it new 20 to 25 years ago; it's unused. My question is on the Chop. It is engraved in the blade with no color; just steel color. In the photo it looks gold, but it's not. There is some documentation on these and that this is a gold Chop. Any input is welcome.

call Al Mar and ask. It may take a few days to get an answer but they will help you best they can. Remember, the Al Mar company itself is made up of less than 7 people so it may take some time. Ive dealt with them on a SERE repair even though it took a couple months they did fix it right so....

There are a couple of serious Al Mar collectors on BF. I've seen posts by them in the past but I don't remember who they are, but I'd give them a chance to jump in about the chop. You might also ask in Bernard Levine's subforum.

I'm not anywhere CLOSE to being an expert but I have bought/carried/followed some Al Mars since 1989 and got to meet Al once. I WISH I knew the answer to this. I recall them being red but I do think I've seen plain ones also. Here is a page from an early Al Mar brochure on a site on Al Mars that may or MAY NOT (:D ) help. Use it as a launching pad anyway...

Here is the deal....

Back in the day.. G.Sakai had some issues keeping up with the demand and acid etching increased in cost.. AL MAR was upset at G.Sakai during many periods of their business relationship.. AL MAR instructed them to release the prepaid order without color.. From what i understand NOT many were made like this and from my 15 years experience of being a hardcore collectors and researcher of only AL MAR knives i have only seen "vintage" AL MAR SERE(SMALL,MED, LARGE, ) and a green micarta eagles, hawks... I like the way they came out.,. Collectors referred to them as GOLD CHOPS..

My sources on this info was someone who worked with AL MAR back in the 80s.. i dont want to put any names out there..
