Some of you may have seen some of my recent work in recreating vintage Bowie knives and I thought that I would give you a sample of what they look like during construction. This is a very abbreviated WIP but will give you an idea of how they come together. For this one I took a large liberty in that I gave it the traditional blade of William Butcher (Sheffield) and the handle of an R. Bunting & Sons (Sheffield). This may be a no-no and feel free to say so if you like. [Bunting may well have been an apprentice of 'W. Greaves & Sons', as his knives often had stamps of both on them.] At this stage the blade is rough ground w/o H/T and the handle barely roughed out. As you may be able to tell, I have substituted 416 for the traditional N/S and stabilized bone for the original ivory scales. The ferrell is solid and pinned to a frame tang. The butt cap is pinned to the frame tang and the pins for the escutcheon extend through the integral tang.

The sheath, as you can see, is still incomplete, with a wooden frame wrapped & sewn with leather but lacking the metal throat & tip. (I am waiting on some silver solder before completing.)

I will post the finished product when done. Let me know what you think.

P.S. Kevin, I enlarged the pics per your request ;).

Thanks for the compliments. It's been a lot of fun recreating some of the classics. I'll have some of them on display at The Branson Show if you're going to be there.
