Got another buck of the ebay, this time it is a vintage Buck 118 new in box with paperwork and packing tissue. It has a flap over sheath and a total of 4 spacers and the spacer under the guard is extended. It also has the pre 1986 blade stamp. So I know it is probably 440 steel and made mid 70s, but the box and paperwork is newer, right?

The switch to the one-piece box probably started about 1978.

Beautiful knife. Group Two 1973-80.......if the box is correct and original to the knife you can figure it's one of the later 78-80 knives.

Love the curves of these old 118s. Yes, it's 440C.

The box, sheath & knife look correct. The one dated paper to me is not. Your knife is a Group 2-- 1973-1980. That paper is from a Group 3 or Group 4 knife. It's easy to mix papers by a seller or buyer. It will go unnoticed. A great looking knife in unused condition. Plus, you snapped some nice photos for us. DM

While it's true the paperwork has an "81" on it......I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

It may mean nothing.

Your knife could have been made in 1980 and, at Buck, dates on paperwork were not always to be trusted as perfect.

Yes , I know but I've given informational data on questions like this and have come to see some here place much weight on the date of those
papers. Solo, one item. In this case I don't as the knife obviously fits in a different Group. DM

Yes, I agree the two piece cream colored box was switched to a one piece box in (around) 1978. So, yes 440C steel. So, Top has a knife that likely went out the door of the Buck plant 40 years ago. A great find in any collectors book. DM

True, although when the difference could be just a few months or even contemporaneous....... I wouldn't be too concerned--even if "some here" might worry.

Knife perhaps made in 1980 and paper printed sometime in 1980 to be used in 1981.

With the rest of the package looking so good in terms of agreement I just don't see it as a problem. It's easily seen as being potentially correct rather than a different "Group."
