Hi all,

This past Summer (2014) I purchased a vintage CASE "CASES Sportsman" fixed blade hunting knife in decent condition.

I am unable to post pixs of my own but, it looks nearly identical to the CASE knife pictured below :

No markings on the BLADE itself but rather on one side of the BOLSTER. It is simply marked : CASE

According to the CASE ID site, this style/type marking was used on their fixed blade Hunting knives circa 1940-1965.

This CASE fixed blade measures 8.5" OAL and has a 4.5" Blade and a 4" handle (stacked leather). It also has a snap leather Sheath with a drawing of an
Elk head and marked underneath Elk are the words CASES SPORTSMAN.

I used Coconut Oil to clean the blade as well as to put some life back into the old stacked leather ring handle and leather sheath.
On the whole, I think it cleaned up quite nicely! I must say, I am REALLY liking the size of this Belt knife and I love it's style! I'm not sure of the Blade thickness but, it is rather thin
(I suspect 3/32's) so I have little doubt it will be a very good cutter/slicer. The leather handle rings are a bit loose. Of course the blade needs to be properly sharpened. If any BF members have vintage CASE fixed blade hunting knives, please feel free to post your pictures. I find it amazing how "RIGHT" CASE got it so many years ago. It's truly a neat piece of CASE history that I'm proud to own.

Regards,

Hi all,

I still have my old CASE "CASES SPORTSMAN" fixed blade hunting knife. It looks like this (borrowed picture/thank you) : https://img0.etsystatic.com/055/0/10649393/il_570xN.749065860_pdbp.jpg

I suspect the CASE was copied after the Marble's Woodcraft Knife (which IMHO has got to be one of THE best looking/coolest knives ever made). http://pocketknivesblog.com/wp-cont...y Scout Woodcraft Leather Strap Knife 030.JPG

I hope to one day have a CUSTOM made (Tribute) Knife made from this style. I still believe I'd go with the thinner 3/32's blade. Is a knife of this style still considered good today or outdated ?

Thanks.

It's a great pattern; however, I'd stick with the 1/8" stock that was standard for the pattern. Hess Knifeworks out of Gladstone, MI recently made this knife too with stacked leather handle. They call it the Hess Hunter.

You case was made earlier in the 1945-1965 period as indicated by its mushroom pommel.

Here is my Kinfolks 380 from the same period as yours.

Hi Leghog,

Awesome! That is a very cool looking knife. I must confess, I am not too familiar with Kinfolks Knives. Leg, I find it interesting that the original pattern was 1/8" stock. My CASE appears to be the same thickness as my vintage "Old Hickory" Butcher knives (which I have read) is (approx.) 3/32's stock. I have many 1/8" fixed blade knives and I'm thinking 3/32's would be welcome due to it's lesser weight and cutting/slicing ability. Oooh, I just search HESS Knives.......VERY nice indeed! Thanks.
