Hi, I have a cleaver that I got from a flea market a while back and recently my interest in playing around with it and making a handle etc was re sparked. I bought it because I thought it would be fun to clean it up and make something cool out of it and I am interested in the maker. All I can make out is a number 9 in the center of the blade and what appears to be "CHES" (the beginning of a word curving down above the 9 and there appears to be some kind of a logo (I cannot get it to appear in the images and its just faint lines so I can't even describe it well) and possibly an "MA" or "NY" at the end of the curve where the CHES starts. above the CHES in an opposite arc are some more faint letters that I cannot quite make out, possibly a "w" beginning the word? its all hard to make out. Here are some images below and any help will be appreciated, its not important that I know the maker etc, just interesting ;)

Thanks!

I'm wondering if that would be CHES of a "Chesapeake Cutlery" or something similar? I found reference to a Chesapeake Cutlery brick/mortar chain in Chesapeake, VA that filed for bankruptcy in 2006 after 25 years in business.

Could there have been an earlier Chesapeake Cutlery or maybe a Chesapeake Hardware that had these made by someone else? This cleaver is very similar to a Chicago Cutlery #8.

I got it!

The faint lines are the back of a cow, I was looking around in another thread with cleavers and someone posted an image and it made sense so I compared and viola! The only thing is that I cannot find too many with a handle like this one, the cleavers I am finding have a round handle with like a rat tail like on file through the handle.

And since pictures are always fun ;) I used some naval jelly and a wire brush on it today and I'm liking the patina.
