I'm new here but I have used this site quite a bit in educating myself on axes and hatchets. I have had this hatchet for a while but I just recently rehab it. Based on the style I think it is central European, German. Austrian, or more likely Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian carpenter's hatchet. Conical eye, canted blade/socket, single bevel. The stamp seems to be a scimitar.. I have found no info on it, not clear what the 48 refers to either. Weights 1lb 4 oz, and 1 3/4 with the handle. Any help on maker, or origin would be appreciated. There is no separate hard bit steel. Thanks!

The scimitar makes me think eastern European but the poll says northern European/Scandinavia. Maybe somewhere in the Slovakia/Hungary/Romania area.

Super cool axe! 8)

Looks like you've put a nice edge on it. I'd love to play with it.

Someone else solved it for me! Fahrngruber Hammer Ybbsitz, Austria. Company registered in 1908, this axe was used extensively during WWI by Austro-hungarian pioneers.
There is people out there that knows a lot about axes!
