Vintage Hults Bruks Eye Dimensions

Lucky me, I found a vintage HB 1-1/2 lb axe head for a decent price and I just couldn't pass it up. I forgot to ask the seller the eye dimensions and I want to get a handle on the way. Anyone know the eye dimensions on the old Hults Bruks axes?

I was thinking I'd put something between 20" and 26" on it if I can find anything in that range. Tennessee Hickory has a 23.5" handle that looks nice but if the eye dimensions are too far off for that to work then is my best bet is to find a replacement handle made by Hults Bruks or Husqvarna?

Thanks in advance!

Was that the nice little baby blue one? Lucky you if it is, as that is a nice one. You should try to carve one yourself while you wait for it, get a good rasp and you'd be amazed at what it will do. Look up, www.househandle.com they will have what you need for a whole bunch less than trying to order one from HB. Congrats to you on your new score and welcome to the fold. I'm sure that will be the last axe you buy.(NOT) Get's pretty addicting, quickly.

That would more than likely be 5/8 x 1 13/16. But they will vary. I don't think you will find a quick fix in the length you seek. A boys axe handle will be as close as you will get. You will need to remove a lot of wood to get your head to fit. By setting it as far down as you could and you could go along ways I think you might get 24 or 25" handle.
You could get a 18" hatchet handle, that makes a 16" to 17" handle for me most of the time.

Its a strange size you seek, for me it would be to long for a hatchet and to short and light for a axe. But many seem to like them. That's why the Hudson Bay pattern Norlunds are so popular I think.

Good luck

That was my initial thought as well but like you said it's such a popular size so I figured I'd give it a shot. I have a 19" house axe and I don't particularly like the length--a little awkward as a one handed hatchet but definitely not long enough to use 2 handed. So my hope is that a few more inches will make this axe long enough to use with 2 hands.

1.5 lbs is kind of an odd weight for an axe head. What size handle would you put on it?

To answer the original question, I just measured my 1 1/2 lb HB. The top of the eye is 13/16" x 2".

FWIW the handle that came with mine was 15". It was used so I have no idea if it was original to the head. I used the old handle as a pattern to make a new one (same length). I use it one handed. For me it's a hatchet with authority. I happen to like it, but I can see where others would have good reason not to. A 1 1/2 lb head might make a great first axe for a youngster???

I also have a 1 1/4 lb HB. The handle is undoubtedly original as it has the plastic goop in the eye that they used for awhile. The length is 15".

You can add me to the victim list of vintage HB hatchet heads that don't fit on a hatchet handle. Looks to me if I set it down on a shoulder of a boys axe handle I have the equivalent of a Norlund HB without the short eye.
I have a couple of House axe handles from House but I damn sure ain't going to waste them on a 1 1/2lb hatchet head.
