G'day all, I'm new here so hello.

Was looking a little while back at getting a new axe but after a bit of research decided to find an old vintage axe and tidy it up for use instead.

Came across a 2.25lb (1kg) H&B at a local market for $15 so jumped on it.

Head appears to be in good condition and there is absolutely no movement.

I'll get some photos up tomorrow, there is a bit of a gauge where it has obviously been over struck.

What would the experienced ones on here do? Re-haft or just wait until it gets loose or breaks?

I'm in two minds as it is very solid but being that this is my first project axe I want it to look good as well. So at the very least I will throw a DIY collar on it.

I just typed this on another thread, so I'll paste it here

to post images you need to use an image hosting site like photobucket, or imgur, or postimage, etc.

I'm not very computer literate and I don't have any trouble with it. Its really not that hard. Just set up an account, download your pictures to that site, and then copy and paste the image link from the site to this website. I use postimage and the link that I use is called "hotlink for forums"

I just paste the link into the message text and the image magically appears

Cool as thanks guys, can I check did my links work? I uploaded to Google Drive and sent as hyperlinks, they work for me when I try on another computer?

No, they won't work unless you let us all link to your Google account which I can't imagine you would want.

I turned on sharing acceptance for the 3 google drive images in my original post. Either way hopefully the imgur ones worked, I haven't used that site before.

Appreciate your help mate.

New handle for sure, that ones shot.Mr Dubois is a pro, that being your first axe your not so you need all the help you can get why start with a weak haft.

Ok cheers, so next question... It currently measures 24 inches (or around 61 cm), what size handle would that axe have come with from factory?

I tried a search and couldn't determine whether it would have been 24 or 26 or 28 in. I'm a vertically challenged male so smaller length handles don't worry me. I do understand it is a bit of a preferential thing and I haven't swung too many so yet to make an informed judgement.

Per the above quote, my apologies if I have offended anyone.

Happy to accept feedback, as there is always a need to pursue answers.

Having never rehung an axe I will be absorbing as much information as I possibly can.

Where are you getting a 24" haft?
Just follow this guys advice when you hang it...

I'm in a small city in Australia so kind of bound by whatever my local tool shop sells.
It's cost prohibitive to get a Hickory handle sent from the US.

Lawtools.com.au supply a range of 'Red Dog' handles to tool shops.

Or the other common supplier is Krugers.com.au or I have chased up vuetrade.com as they are Aus based and sell Hickory handles.

If anyone has a good recommendation or knows of an online retailer in Australia I'm all ears.
