Old Timer knives were a big part of my childhood. Case XX knives were unobtainable as a young'un, but an occasional Schrade Old Timer was within my grasp. I carried one for many years, doing the things kids do with knives; Whittling, playing mumbly peg, swapping, carving trees, and building forts.

Notice the description for the 8OT and 34OT are reversed.

Great ad, glad you posted it. I also credit much of my love for pocketknives and hunting (sheath) knives on advertising. Buck resonated with me when I was a boy, but I remember liking them all (a fun part of reading Boys Life and Outdoor Life). Buck got me with the knives being able to cut a bolt in two.

That's cool. I have a distinct memory of seeing Schrade Old Timer displays in the sporting goods section of a department store at the mall when I was pretty young - maybe pre-teens or early teens back in the early-mid '70s. I'd accompany my Dad when he was browsing there and always drooled over what was then unobtainable for me. That memory drove my desire to eventually own a few of them, like an 8OT, 108OT and two or three 25OT Folding Hunters, one of which is an older Schrade-Walden version.

One of my earliest knife memories is asking my grandfather to cut things with his 108OTView attachment 2828629This very knife, in fact.
That picture^ reminded me of the one I've got. Not an heirloom like yours. But these still kind of take me back, every time I look at them. I think this 108 OT is the first Old Timer I acquired, once I was able to buy one with my own money.

The first pocket knife I purchased with my own money was a 34ot 1970. I was so proud of that little knife. I think about half the kids in school who carried a pocket knife had a 34ot. The other half was a mix of sak, Boy Scout knives and a few case. I lost it out in the field about a year and a half later. And then I stepped up and I got a 8ot around 1974. I was in the big boy group then . 😆

Talk of the 108OT brings back a memory. I was 10, I got a 108OT for Christmas. I was using it top open other gifts, and I promptly stabbed myself deeply in the left hand. On the "heel" of my hand. I still have the scar and remember the pain 30 years later. I don't know what happened to that little knife.
